I'm still able to get away with the "but they're each unique!" excuse. Don't know what will happen when that wears thin.

Spousey has 17 horses and I do the horseshoeing, barn repair, truck repair, trailer repair, and some cooking. I have 4 hats (at least) for every horse and nothing has been said. I wonder what hat per horse ratio gets me in trouble?

Lol I like that! I would have to check how many handbags and shoes she has to figure out the ratios compare to my Hats......:D

Mine has just 3 but my hat multiplier is considerably higher than yours! I don't shoe or trim hooves but do those other chores plus a few more.
You have my considerable compliments, Sir! I stay in trouble so being in it for another hat is a minor offense in my book...

Luckily, my wife is very understanding. I've always worn hats, so she certainly got to see them when we were dating and when she moved in with me, there were plenty of hats in the house.

Nowadays, the hats are much nicer than the ones I had then. And much pricier (Optimo and Stetson ain't cheap), but we make much more money now, too. She still says I look good in them. And I still don't have that many nice hats--"only" about a dozen (there are 10 hat boxes in the apartment and a couple of hats that lack boxes).

I forgot to take my medicine!! and have just ordered yet another hat, this time an ad-vintage Harrison.
I must therefore compliment my wife on her ever growing shoe, bag and scarf collection!

I have been married 37 years and have collected many things of quality and expense such as old Winchesters & Marlins, CC silver dollars, various antiques ect. When she asks for instance, " is that a new gun"? I smile and say "sweetheart, does this gun look new"? She will usually squint her eyes with a smirk and say under her breath, " I thought so".

Pretty common here I'd wager.

Every time I declare that this hat purchase will be my last my wife of 40 years rolls her eyes. I can't even use the shoe thing with her as I have more shoes/boots in my collection that she does. However she is astute enough to acknowledge that a hat collection is far superior to some of my friends who are in the process of collecting ex wives!

LOL. Yes, if I had $1 for every time my wife said "another hat?" I'd have enough to by a dozen more hats!! I get obsessive about things, all too often. I have several different collections including a large Star Trek collect that I only recently sold.

Was the decision to part with the collection difficult and was the actual sale more difficult yet?

You betcha it was hard. I sold it all to make room for newer collections. I also sold it because it was a collection I hadn't added to or much tended to for years and years. It was one of the first things I started collection in the early 70s when I was a teenager. So, it had that "old friend" feeling. But I finally just came to feel that I was no longer enjoying it and was no longer really into it all so I felt that someone who would really appreciate it should get it all. It all went to a single guy and that helped me let it go because it was going to someone who really cared about it.

My addiction was mountain bikes and it eventually filled my garage. It too became less enjoyable and more of a burden so decided to not entirely liquidate but at least a major downsize. It was very hard as I was so connected to these "things" but it feels good to have my garage back. Now the collection is just fedoras and that is more manageable in size and $$$.

I'm just hoping that I'll be able to buy one decent quality cooler weather hat and then a decent Panama straw hat for the warmer months. My collectibles in the past have been less expensive, like coffee mugs and baseball caps. :)
