If anyone hasn't caught the MOnk documentary by Clint Eastwood "Straight, no Chaser", it's well worth a look.

A funny moment occurs about two-thirds in, when Monk's band in on the bus and TM compliments Griffin on his groovy striped pants, picked up in Europe.

Another giant falls

Sorry to hear of Johnny's passing - A great musician indeed.

So many of the giants I've been priveleged to see in person are gone. Who is replacing them? there are a few out there getting "Air Time" but until commercial television turns it's camera back on real talent, they won't survive.

By the way, Is "Straight No Chaser" available on dvd?

To hear Griffin's true mastery on the saxophone, listen to Thelonious In Action and Misterioso, both live dates recorded at the Five Spot nightclub in 1958. I know every nuance of those discs, from the ringing telephones in the background to Monk's grunts while playing. Essential Jazz.

R.I.P.

I thought I'd better explain myself...

From reading my own post, it would seem like Jazz is the sound of men grunting and phones ringing! That's not what I meant, of course, but live dates do have non-musical elements, too.
