Ann Dvorak: Does Anyone Remember Her?

That's the same picture I was going to mention -- very entertaining, and she did quite a few parts in that same vein at Warners, and was also in one of my favorite Rudy Vallee musicals, "Sweet Music," where she was completely unlike her pre-code self. She didn't get along well with the mucky-mucks at Warners, and her roles sufferered as a result.

I very recently saw her in a short film over here, something made for the war effort. I was very surprised to see her in a British film until I looked her up on IMDB and read she moved over here after her career didn't quite go to plan over there.
I love pre-codes, and she was brilliant in quite a few of them. Scarface, Three On A Match, and The Strange Love of Molly Louvain I have in my collection. One of her films that I would love to find is Massacre, as I also am very fond of Richard Barthelmess, especially in those pre-codes.

Oh please. Anyone who loves 30s movies knows her. lol

My husband currently has a huge crush and is using a photo of her for his FB avatar.

I like Dvorak a lot (and agree that she's not really any more "forgotten" than most actresses of the 1930s and '40s, with a very few exceptions). Most recently, I saw her in GIRLS OF THE ROAD (1940), which was sort of a tepid, distaff version of William Wellman's vastly superior WILD BOYS OF THE ROAD.

Bunnyb.gal, a friend of mine is really intrigued that you recently saw a British short film with Ann. To her knowledge, the only short that Ann did in Britain was called "There's a Future in It," directed by her husband, Leslie Fenton, and co-starring Barry Morse.

My friend's understanding is that the BFI has a nirtrate print that is now off-limits, so she would be really interested in finding out if this was the film you viewed, and where you viewed it.

Would it be possible for you to contact me directly with details of this screening? My friend (who is writing a biography of Ann Dvorak) would really appreciate it.

I was just rewatching the Strange Love of Molly Louvain the other day. Hard to get enough, I'd say! :)

Hi Marc Chevalier,

Unfortunately I was not able to PM you about this, I think because I've recently joined and haven't the required number of posts.

I did a little web search to jog my memory, and this short was included in a documentary shown over here called "Home Front Britain" on the Discovery Channel, and it aired shortly before I posted. There are details on the (co.uk) website.

I do hope you get this message, and that it will be of help to your friend. Also, please make sure that when your friend finishes the project you post the news; I'll definitely buy a copy!
