Ok, here we go on that note:

Have you ever noticed how people will come up to you and ask if you are moving when you have furniture all over the lawn? I tell them no, I am having a yard sale or that I am taking them for a walk one by one. Furniture needs airing out and a good walk always makes furniture so much fresher. They can see the moving van right out in front of the house. Why ask something so obvious? What's up with that?
Don't even get me started on when a For Sale sign goes up on your property and some idiot neighbor always comes up to you to ask if you are moving. :eusa_doh:

Andy:p

Double breasted suits

I know the fedora comment is the one that started this thread, but Andy also stated that double breasted jackets only look good on tall men. I think Bogart proved him wrong on that one. Poorly tailored double breasted jackets only look (marginally) good on tall men. Well tailored double breasted jackets make all men look good, whether they are slapping around Peter Lorre, or taking the piss out of a kid with a heater in a hotel lobby.

Please don't compare our Loungers with Rooney, whether you like him or not. He puts things down for no reason. He is like Grandpa Simpson, whose observations don't make any sense. I don't have an like or dislike him, I find him incomprehensible. Most of what our Loungers say makes sense.

Andy Rooney Article.

Do what I did. Write him a letter: a.rooney1919@yahoo.com

Dear Mr. Rooney,

I always enjoy your commentaries, but I couldn't disagree with you more about the fedora. You called it "one of the dumbest items of clothing ever invented."

In the past year, I have learned to love the fedora and you will seldom see me outside without one. It started when I grew tired of the baseball cap and found the courage to try on a fedora. Courage because not many men wear them today. I discovered what my grandfather knew as well as many generations of men before him. Not only do fedoras have style, they are also incredibly practical. They keep the head warm in the winter and cool in the summer. They also have the added benefit of keeping my skin shaded from the sun. The baseball cap is neither fashionable or practical (unless you are playing baseball). If you don't believe me then let's go to a ball game together. I'll wear my fedora and you wear a baseball cap, and we'll see by the end of the game whose neck isn't red with sunburn.

Fashion has been trending more casual for years. So much so that "business casual" is now the standard style of dress at the office. For years I celebrated this until I realized one inescapable fact. People look better when they dress up. Tired of looking like a slob, I began wearing suits to the office again. Not only do I look better than my coworkers, but I feel better about myself and I am more confident. People treat me differently, with more respect. The fedora played a large part in my transformation.

The last 40 years has been an anomaly with regard to men going hatless and I believe that generations of men don't know what they are missing. I wear a fedora everyday and everyday I get at least one compliment from both men and women. Why? Because people still love the fedora but are afraid to wear it, and for the dumbest reason possible - because most people don't wear them.

Now that truly is dumb, Mr. Rooney.

Me with my fedora at The Hoover Dam. By the way, the suit is double breasted and looks fantastic.

Yeah, it sure is "dumb" keeping your head warm in the winter and fending off skin cancer in summer. All this fashion advice comes, of course, from the guy who can't manage to trim his eyebrows shorter than the Grinch's (hmm... you know, there IS resemblance...).

What's "dumb" is that Rooney didn't state what he thought was dumb about the fedora. To me, it is dumb to not wear an accessory that protects your head and face from the sun, what with ozone layer problems and the rise in skin cancer, etc. Not to mention keeps your head warm in winter.

I think some guys in his era resented the fact that they had to wear a fedora in an era when it was almost dictated that a man not leave his home without one on his head, just as many guys complain about having to wear ties.

If any headgear is "dumb" it is the ballcap: a piece of headgear that was designed to be worn by kids and grown men when they played a certain sports game -- and now everybody wears them indoors and out, men and women, boys and girls, even their pets. The ballcap does not protect anything but maybe the upper part of your face, certainly not the ears or neck or any part of your face below the nose. And try wearing one on a day like today in Iowa, with the temperature at zero degrees.

Perhaps we should be grateful people did not decide to wear the headgear used for football.

There, I sound just like the old codger....

Golly, I just love this thread:)

I had no idea their were other people who felt the same way about Rooney as I did!

Sad thing is, for some reason when I was a kid my dad nicknamed me "Rooney". It's a shortened version of an old yiddish endearment. But, now I associate it with the old "crumudgeon"! I've asked him very politely not to call me that any more!

On Rooney's comment, I'd just disregard it.

On Rooney, he came of age in an era when wearing a hat was part of everyday dress. Some folks who had to wear them resented it, just like people resent any item of clothing they have to wear. It doesnt' mean that there wasn't a good reason that the Fedora was popular, and it doesn't mean that it isn't practical. It only shows an odd quirk of human nature.

I've met, over time, people who hated hats because the Army made they wear them, or hated suits because they are formal wear. They can become very adament about it, to the point of lack of reason. But that doesn't do you any good if you look like a bum in a formal setting, or if it rains on your head and you have wet hair. It just demonstrates a decided contrarian streak. Sometimes that has value, but often it is just an inclination to be against something, not matter what it is.

I think you kind of hit it there. Some people do not know how to work within a framework though. If you don't want to wear something then wear the loudest and most ostentatious thing you can get. In my case it is that I hate super casual clothes. Forced in cases where I have to wear it, I might go for the loudest Hawaiian shirt I have with seersucker pants. :p You work within the framework. ;)
Please don't wear a leisure suit to protest the suit though. You are making their point for them there.

J
