And now for something completely different

When's the last time you've done something completely different or outside your normal realm of taste, just to find out if you love it or hate it? Or, just because you feel in need of a mind-cleansing experience?

I've recently run into friends I knew from elementary school days in the NC boys choir... we still have a few interests in common but many different, & we're now testing each others' out. So next month, these guys are taking me to see their favorite band, CLUTCH:

YouTube

  Curiosity, the cat, and all... might be exciting or terrifying, but I just can't go on any longer never having been to a concert with a mosh/fight pit. None of us are pushovers, but between the four of us, there's nothin' to worry about (these are the kind of guys you want on Your side).

What stuff have you tried that way, & what new interests did you find that stuck?

I don't mosh. I know girls who've gotten busted up, and if I wanted my shirt ripped off and my nose broken I'd be a hockey player.[huh]

I'm thinking of trying to start yoga, at the recommendation of a couple different friends. Its not at all my usual type of thing, especially since one of them has gotten really New Age with it, but it should be reasonably healthy and I might learn something.

I can strongly recommend yoga -- before I wrecked my back (in a non-yoga-related incident!) I regularly took classes at the Y. I'm usually very wary of new-agey stuff, but in the classes I took the emphasis was on the physical rather than the metaphysical, and it worked wonders for my tense muscles.

Most important thing is to find a class where you can keep your own pace -- I had one teacher who had a drill-sergeant approach to it, and after two sessions it was obvious there'd have to be a parting of the ways. Best to find a teacher who lets you be the judge of what you're comfortable doing and how long you're comfortable doing it!

Hm, about 5 years ago when I was still in Philadelphia, a rodeo exposition came and I dragged a few friends to go with me. I loved it!! I was surprised to see a variety of people there, too.

Slightly taboo-

My fiance is a prankster and an overall goofball. He loves to do things and own things that make people raise an eyebrow- merely for his amusement. For Christmas 2 years ago, I had no ideas on what to get him. So as a last resort, I asked him what he wanted.

His response? A pole dancing pole.
I should learn not to ask him for ideas.

I said no immediately, but as Christmas drew closer and I still had no ideas, I ended up getting him a pole that would be easily removed from wherever it was set up. That way he could put it up to amuse guests, and I could have some piece of mind when my mother came for a suprise visit! :)

A little while after that, I realized that there was a pole dancing craze sweeping the world. And I had one that I didn't know how to use. So on a whim, I signed up for a class at a local studio that specializes in pole dancing for excersize (not teaching you how to be an exotic dancer!). Now, 2 years later, I actually teach pole dancing at that very same studio!!

People are so shocked when I tell them, it's so not of the norm for me!!

Oh, I have NO intention of joining in! The idea of random purposeless shoving / fighting does nothing for me at all. Just going there mainly cause my friends I'm catching up with *so* want me to go with them at least once. We all plan on hanging out to the sidelines.

'Course, judging from the youtube clip, it looks like the kind of concert where you may get "unwanted invitations to dance", so I'm planning to have fun, but stay alert.

Rodeo! There's something new! Good for you, I might have to try that. Really haven't partaken in many distinctly "southern" traditions, nor ever listened much to country or southern rock... ironic, since I grew up here. Always was more of an urban kid.

I could watch yoga allll dayyyy......

I've always been open-minded. I feel like I've done everything.

-Been to death metal/punk/rock concerts and been caught in mosh pits.
-Did yoga, even serious weightlifting. I used to be an exercise nut.
-Been to rodeos, gone dirt biking, partied in the woods, listened to nothing but country music -- did the typical South Jersey rednecky things!
-I literally like all kinds of music. I''ve been through every phase imaginable when it comes to music and I've been to all the shows.
-I watch all kinds of movies, although I admit I don't know an iota about movies from the 2000s.
-I've always had friends of different races so I always got to experience what they liked. And a little bit of that always rubbed off on me.
-Back in 1997 I went and pierced everything! They all came out by 2001, though! And I have multiple tattoos. I want more.

When I tell people I've done all these things they're like "You!!?"

I don't know what else I could do that I haven't done. I've had multiple piercings, lived abroad, lived in different states (I wouldn't mind living in California). Not very long ago, friends of mine made me eat sushi which I WOULD not do before. The idea of eating raw fish was just too gross to me.

If I think of something, I'll add to this.
