I have been looking for a nice leather satchel or shopper to use as a bookbag when I start classes in the fall. I am having a very hard time finding something structured (curse you, slouchy hobo style!), classic, and less than $300. Can anyone suggest anything? What did college/grad students use to carry their books back in the day? Thanks!

$200 from Duluth Pack. U.S. made, brass hardware, full hide leather. It also comes in leather and canvas.

I have one of their backpacks that I like very much.

I was just about to recommend one of these, or something similar from the same eBay seller, but I realised they only ship within the EU ... but they are beatiful bags and I won one for just over £40 - about $60 ... sorry:eusa_doh:

Heh. We should all email hbnyc and ask her to put a detachable shoulder strap on the uniform bag. I'd buy one in a heartbeat if it had one. As it is I'm considering the black and red briefcase, but I'd really prefer the black & white uniform bag.

If you contact the manufacturer and let them know things like that ("I'd buy this if it had a shoulder strap!" or "Could you add a matching detachable shoulder strap?") and/or make suggestions, they may do it. Sometimes they come up with a concept and by the time it goes through meeting after meeting after meeting with all of the different departments, they think they've got the perfect product. And it could be they've just never thought of it. The wiser companies listen to the consumer out in the marketplace about what the consumer wants, rather than some internal pin-head telling the company to tell the consumer what they should want.

Actually, I emailed to ask if there was a strap on it, and she said:

"I'm actually redesigning the uniform bag right now, hoping it will be
back in stock with some hot new interiors and detailing in time for
Xmas. That's a rad idea about a removable shoulder strap! I'm going
to see if I can work it into the design - thanks for such a great idea!

So I'm keeping my fingers crossed for an awesome new shoulder-capable bag for Xmas! ^_^
