But it, as Paisely says, suggests "classic" without the burden of some of the shades of "old-fashioned" i.e. dusty and unlikeable.

"Gentlemen of the old school" is always a compliment.

"Gentlemen of the old school" is a compliment but, I'd rather be referred to being old fashioned then old school. Unlike some, I like old stuff because it is old... I like my dusty clothes and beliefs.lol

Tsk tsk, Wild Root, why don't you dust these beliefs occasionally? They've gotten cobwebs on me! ;)

The term “old school” is pretty hip. I think that people on this board don’t like the way that the term has been hijacked by today’s general populace. There was a Simpsons episode making fun of modern overused terms a number of years ago. Two new TV shows were entitled “Don’t go there” and “Talk to the Hand”. Now those are lame terms. “Old school” is just overused. I think that the people on this board like to be different. Ironically, I believe that many of the members on this board would be disappointed if modern society adopted retro fashion. Everyone here would just be “average”. Cheers

"Old school hip hop, referring to the hip hop music of anywhere from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. Hip hop historians(!) consider the late 1970s to the early 1980s to be old school, then the late 1980s to 1990s as Golden Age, but the mainstream often refers to the late 1980s, early 1990s period as Old School.

So are Eric B and Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Run Dmc, Slick Rick, Ice T, Ultra Magnetic Mc's, PE, KRS One and BDP, Kool Mo Dee, Grand Master Flash and the Furious 5, NWA, Toddy Tee, Afrika Bambatta and the Soul Sonic Force, Stetasonic.... Oldschool or classic? Wildroot, the people who refer to your 30's and 40's clothing as oldschool are the same people who refer to this music as oldschool. I can tell you that this music to them is a nostalgic era when their used to be quality in mainstream rap and an era that was the equivlent to them as the golden era of our time. the only diffrence is we wear fedoras they don't wear high top fades with waves on the side, def jam leather jackets and nike hightops. what I'm trying to say it is a very high compliment to be considered oldschool for those who truley love rap music.

Here's one difference between the old and new usages of the term:

-- Old usage: "He's of the old school."

-- New usage: "He's old school."

See the difference? Hear the difference? He's no longer from a school. Today, he is a school!

.

Marc, you've demonstrated something they taught us in exegetical classes at seminary, the interpretation of a text often rests on a preposition. Little words; BIG differences. Way to go! :eusa_clap

Ah, take me home...

"Back in the Day" "Bac-n da day"

"Old School" "Old Skool"

Were local euphemisms that I grew up using since the 70s. I love em, and use them in context to the conversation, not to just say them. Mainly we would apply the terms to music, but often we would follow them up with a very proper sounding comment.

"Back in the day, my young man..."

or

"That suit is from the old school..."

Of corse with the 'mainstream' of jive of the dozens (terms no one uses anymore) it all came out in the wash. You know its been beaten to death when the boss of your job started saying ''You go Girl" with reckless abandon.

*sigh*

Thank you! Comes from having been an English major. I've also prepared lots of folks for graduate school entrance exams, where prepositions are key.

.

May I use the term in this context?

Marc is of the Old School. Thank God!
