American Idol Tries "Rat Pack Standards"

There was one kid, only about 17 or 18, who made it to the top 24 or something on Australian Idol a couple of years back. He wanted to be a crooner in the mold of Sinatra or Como, via Buble, I guess. Anyway, the kid dug the style and it showed . . . he could sing and had potential. But because his style wasn't overblown faux-gospel note-wrangling pop tripe, he didn't make the final 12.

My wife watches the show so while I don't consciously sit down to watch it, I catch bits of it now and then, and I've seen them in the past do a show where the 'vocalists' try to croon. It's always been painful to listen to, as they try to fit twenty-six scale-surfing notes into a two-note Nat 'King' Cole phrase. Their phrasing is always ridiculous too, they've got no idea.

Bring back the kid, wherever he is! He had the feel right and he wasn't flat on every second note!

Perhaps it's perversity on my part, but I really dislike the basic concepts of most reality shows and find them demeaning to the contestants, so I don't watch. I do make an exception for Dancing With The Stars, as I like its premise and find it to be a positive show. Idol has never interested me and I think I've watched a total of less than 30 minutes of all the seasons combined.
