American Idol + Suits = Peaked Lapels

I've been meaning to post this for a while, but the American Idol finale last night got me off my arse to do so.

*Not that I watched it or anything*

Jokes aside, I've been meaning to point out something strange (and cool) about this season of American Idol:

Almost every men's suit that was on the show was a Single-Breasted-Peaked-Lapel (SBPL).

I thought this was really weird, because from what I could gather among the "modern" folk was that a SBPL was a big no-no in the fashion industry. I guess I was wrong.

Ryan Seacrest, Simon Cowell, and several of the contestants were all wearing very nice peaked lapel jackets...and this is leading to my question; Where are all these men getting theses suits?

I've yet to find a SBPL in any stores, anywhere. They really are not popular - so how come all of a sudden they are popping up all over the show?

But regardless, are the peaked lapels coming back into style, or what? I think it's quite cool; I prefer the peaked over the notched by 110%.

Discussion...?

Martha Stewart had a men's fashion show...
*not that I watch it or anything either* ;)
that featured a couple of SBPL suits by..Thom Ford, I believe.
In fact, one suit had wicked wide lapels! I need to visit his place in NYC.

I'm not sure American Idol is necessarily indicative of modern dress habits.

And there's always custom tailored clothing, I imagine.

His knot looks proportional to his collar, tie, lapels...

I think it is the exact right size.
True.
I am expressing this opinion based on seeing the wide tie done to death on televison (especially the Bravo channel) and on the streets of NYC.

I agree. BTW Stan, TF's collar style would suit you much better than your cutaways.;)

I agree with Feraud that the really wide tie is being over-done.
Also, I was under the impression that regardless of whether a tie, collar, and lapels are proportional, they all need to be proportional to the wearer. Maybe wide lapels were the fashion rage of the Golden Era, and maybe wide ties are back in fashion today. However, isn't a man's shoulders the real determining factor in how wide his lapels should be (and therefore the width of his tie as well)? And isn't the collar best matched to the shape of a man's head? In my opinion (and based on lots of classic style reading), the look of this photo is off. The jacket lapels are overly wide for the person wearing the suit, regardless of the correct proportion of other accessories. Furthermore, the monotone gray look makes the wearer appear sickly instead of illuminating his face (and directing other's gaze toward the face).

Compare that with the following photo. Here, the lapels are more proportionate in size to the wearer's shoulder width. Additionally, everything comes together with the use of some color to really accentuate the wearer's face and features. Nicely done.:eusa_clap

Back to the original discussion topic - I agree with Jerekson that the SBPL suit seems to be making a come back. For that I am very happy (so long as everybody doesn't start wearing them and they take the place of the ubiquitous notch lapel). Except for that really nice cotton suit at Target that I'll probably purchase, I'm having trouble finding any SBPL suits at local retailers.:eusa_doh: I suppose I'll have to shop around online.
