Lots of good western hats 30-40 years ago. Back then they were at least as good as Stetson

I haven't seen an American Hat Co. lid for 20-25 years.

Remember, back in the Urban Cowboy daze ... Stetson tried to cash in and many of us who were wearing their stuff back in the mid'70s felt the quality tanked

American Hat may still make good hats, I just haven't seen one in years.

I had a buddy in the mid-'70s who prefered them ... westerns, understand ... over Stetsons

I had switched to Resistol and his Americans were at least as good as my Resistols were.

American has been through some turmoil and has moved a few times. They are now pretty close to me in Bowie TX. I looked at some of their felt hats at a booth at a horse show and they were decent hats but they were priced even with Resistol and Stetson and they seemed a tick off the finish quality of those.

Reviving this old thread that seems to have gone astray.

This old Whiskey 3X western is one of my favorites. It was cheap and I wasn’t expecting much, but it’s turned out to be one of my favorite outdoor hats. I gave the brim a small trim and kettle curl. The hat is so much nicer than my 1970s and newer 3X and 4X Stetsons and Resistols. I’d like to find more of these.

The warm russet color is the most accurate.

I was in a western shop in Pendleton Oregon last year and they stocked American Hat westerns. They all came flat brimmed and open crown so you could get the retailer to bash them to your liking. My impression was they were a bit on the pricey side for the felt quality but then they were western weight and that is outside my realm of experience.

I got mine used and cheap. Mine is definitely western and on the stiff side but nowhere near are hard/stiff as say a current Stetson 6X. It’s the perfect compromise hat for someone who wants a rugged outdoors hat but still appreciates felt with a nice hand and some pliability.

I suppose it’s also a product of the “they don’t make them like they used to” affliction.

I posted something about American 8 years ago. I have to revise that now.
Under Keith's ownership the hats are great. They make a range of fur felts with differing contents or hare or rabbit and beaver. I have a recent 100% beaver and it is a great hat with a very fine sweatband and was made with attention to detail and felt finish. Very good hand to the hat for a western weight hat. I have many horsemen (and women) friends that have American hats and they are all holding up and all look good with hard use. I applaud his efforts at making American Hat Co a great hat to own. I purchased several hats from his store, Best Hat Store, since it opened down by the Ft Worth Stockyards district.

If I understand your question right:
For what I can see, it's a well made hat but a bit stiff.
In terms of "modern" long hairs, I still prefer the Resistol Panda (it have longer hairs) but neither beat the Real Nutria long hair.

To me it looks like a jacket and not a vest. But then I’m not part of the leather crowd.
