Always Coca-Cola? Ain't Nothin' Like The Real Thing!

Since I am from NC, the founding home of Pepsi, I have always been partial to Pepsi. Most people drink coffee in the mornings, I have to have my Pepsi. I don't care much for Coke since New Coke came out and they went back to what they called their Coke Classic. It was just not the same. I can only drink a Coke in a glass or in their glass bottles. I wish Pepsi would go back to putting their drinks in the 16 oz long necks. Nothing like an Ice cold Pepsi in a glass bottle and a honeybun. I also like RC Colas and Moon Pies.

You can actually still find Pepsi in glass bottles if you know where to look. Small-town convenience stores in Texas often stock it.

Thanks for the info. I will have to check it out. I thought I had found a 16 ounce pepsi in the long neck at a conveinence store, but when I got it home, I noticed that it had a paper Mexican label on it. I had also bought the Coca Cola one and it to had the same label. When I tasted both, they both tasted the same but were neither Pepsi or Coke. The Mexican bottler was just recycling the bottles for his own drinks. It was nasty. Mast General Store in Valle Crucis, NC up near Boone in the Mountains of NC, they have pepsi products in the long necks, such as Moutain Dew, but no regular Pepsi, but they may have just been out that day.

Does anyone else remember taking cases of empty soda bottles back to the bottling plant? I remember doing that with my Dad...

Heck, back in the day as a young kid I would load up my little red wagon and walk the 7 blocks by myself to the little Mom & Pops store...and ended up spending most of the money back on Coke, Necos and Superman Comics.

Good thing I didn't find out later as a teen that we had a charge account there !!!

and as a side note as sad commentary about the changing times...I can't even let my son walk one block away unsupervised!

When I was in high school I'd stop and get a Pepsi and a honeybun just about every day after school. When I was younger I'd always get a small Coke. They were in a seperate machine and cost 7 cents compared to 10 cents for the ten oz. size. I'd have money left over for candy or bubble gum.

I'm not that keen on Pepsi my self but, the cane sugar Pepsi isn't bad. I'm a coke man deep down but, also enjoy a good cane sugar bottle of Dr. Pepper!

Soda in glass bottles with cane sugar is just a beautiful thing!

Here is a new developement that has appeared in the Mexican sodas being sold in the US. The bottles they have been selling over the last few months are not reusable. Look like they are now specifically making Mexican Coke and Pepsi for US consumption. It's a guess. and I could be wrong. Mexico still refills their bottles. It's a waste of weight and glass to keep sending refillable bottles that will be trashed in the US. I think that is the reason for the switch to the thinner non refill Mexican Soda bottles from Pepsi and Coca-Cola.

Whatever the reason, the good old chrystalizing Cane sugar Coke is still on it's way and taking away little pieces of America's newly formulated corn syrup marketshare.

Count me as another fan of Dublin Dr. Pepper. I don't even really like normal Dr. Pepper, but Dublin Dr. Pepper is flat-out fantastic. It's also really easy to find here in Fort Worth - virtually every grocery store from Super Target to Central Market (the drool-worthy dream grocery store) carries it.

I'm also a big fan of Boylan's. I got introduced to them via my whining to my girlfriend. Years ago, I was on vacation with my family in Chincoteague Island, Virginia, and ate at a small restaurant that carried birch beer instead of root beer. Never had it before, tried it, and loved it. Back in Texas, it's not a common sight (though I do love good root beer too), and I was lamenting to Steph about its absence. Next time we were at Central Market, we found the Boylan's Birch Beer in the painted glass bottles, and it was just as good as I remembered it.

Coke got smart and forced some of their Mexican bottlers to package some for a pilot program to ship to the U.S. Coke is none too happy about the cane suger Mexican coke making it into the U.S, unless they get a cut. (sorry about all the subliminal drug references.:eusa_doh: )

I have an old Coke bottle vending machine, and I go to the Mexican store to get Coke in bottles to stock it. It's a little expensive, but so worth it for having coke in a bottle. I also keep IBC and Stewart's products in it.

Johnny, listen to me - there'll be plenty more of these sodas and candy, too! All you have to do is make sure Mister Soprano gets that list of numbers every day before 5 o'clock, and you bring the envelope he gives you back to me lickity-split.
Mmmkay?

A curious encounter.

I was at the local Wal-Mart which suddenly arose in my area and surprisingly ran into something I wasn't expecting. Now knowing that Coca-Cola in the USA doesn't really want to see it's distributers from other markets interfere with eachother's turf... well... Lets just say they are.

I was in fron of the media center and saw a bin full of DVDs for 5.99. Under these DVDs were palets of glass bottled Coca-Cola from Mexico. I was stunned. Not that it was in the DVD area, though it was in Wal-Mart. I grabbed a few bottles and asked an employee how much the Coca-Cola was and I was sent to the soft drink section of the store. The sodas had on them bar codes though they had no individual price tags.

In the Soft drink section I looked and looked. I saw American Coke all around though not hide nor hair of the Mexican Coke... sweet nectar of the gods with real Cane sugar (could it only be being sold in the electronic media section?).

Well I decided to ask an employee in the soft drink area. "Oh... Yeah, we don't display Mexican Coke with the US product" --??Hmm I thought??--.

She sent me to Isle 5... the isle of mexican foods. Taco shells and tequila mixers. A space for Coke which was not filled.

Here is my question, and I know it might be to no benefit to me to mention this as I could be outting Mexican Coke in a US marketplace that is very mainstream. Is carrying Mexican Coca-Cola at Wal-Mart... A huge corporation which seemingly wants to be law abiding by all means (though it's not illegal to cary Mexican Coca-Cola). Is Wal-Mart carrying Mexican Coca-Cola with US Coca-Cola's aproval? or are they doing it under US Coke's nose?

Here is another tidbit: Mexican Coke is cheaper at Wal-Mart than at the sodapop shop.

Now if they would only start carrying Dublin Dr. Pepper, I could stop going to that shop all together.

As it is, US Coca-Cola has lost a customer of their can's and two liter bottles, and Mexican Coke has gained a new customer who can stock up at a lower than competitors cost at the Wal-Mart that is less than a block away.

Thank you Wal-Mart.

Shame on you, abandoning your small shop for Wally World for the sake of a few cents. :(

I'll remain a buyer of Mexican coke at Gelco's... I like the 8oz bottles best any way.

I'm not a supporter of Wal*Fart... I may buy Mexican Coke there if the price is right... but, I'd never stop going over Gelco's because of the large variety of other nostalgia type of sodas they offer. I don’t only like Coke… I like NEHI, Vernor’s, Cheerwine, Orange Crush and Royal Crown.

Matt, it is nice to have a source for Mexican Coke that is so close to your home… now, do you think they stock it at most Wal*Marts or just the Star Destroyer sized stores?

Royal Crown? I knew it had a couple uses, but you can drink it, too?
