The first thing I noticed after coming home was that, picking up my Alpha B-15 off the hanger, it was immediately obvious that the MA-1 was nearly twice as heavy. My B-15 weighs next to nothing by comparison.

As long as you are in Frankfurt:

Make sure you visit "The Listener" on Stephanstraße 1. Great shop with a huge range of great products:

Keep in mind that Alpha sell three versions of the CWU 45P jacket:

mil-spec nomex version ($$$$$$$$$$)

fake nomex version ($$) made to look like nomex

nylon version ($$)

Yes, I know. Leaning towards G&B as they offer side entry (hand warmer) pockets. Already stated, but the quality of the Alpha jacket was first rate. Everything from the stitching, to the cuffs / waistband, to the shell material.
Plus we intend to do some customizing thru the use of patches being sewn on.

You mean the quality of the nylon version? Alpha definitely seems to have got nylon figured out!

Here's a screenshot from the German Alpha website - standard MA-1 but with the (more historically correct) longer pockets with the angled tops. The old made in the USA versions had those pockets and I'm surprised you can still get that design in Europe but in north America only the new square pocket flaps. Why mess with tradition?

I don't think Alpha make any of their jacket in USA now, I've seen one Made in China MA-1, it is very nice. All the Made in USA jackets are deadstck I think. One more thing, dont go for their new M-65, the quality still good, but with very stupid design.
Their still produce a limited number of their jackets in the States. It seems like they are restricted to making one colour of each of their models in the States. For example, the silver N-2B is made in the States.
