Allen Edmonds Winfield Help

I just purchased a pair of Allen Edmonds Winfields on ebay here http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...76373&ssPageName=STRK:MEBDIX:IT#ht_500wt_1154

I got them in and they have a texture in the leather of little lines. You can just barely see it in the photos. It's uniform over the entire shoe so I don't think it's wear.

I've never seen this before on a pair of AE's and was wondering if someone might know what this kind of leather would be called?

I emailed Allen Edmonds and they told me that these shoes aren't in there database because they are so old so they couldn't give me any info.

Thanks for any help,
Sam

Also, any info on the age of these would be appreciated. I just got another email back from AE saying that their database goes back to 1988 and so these were made earlier than that.

I'll try to get some better photos when I get home later today.

Thanks,
Sam

I've seen pebble grain before and it's not like that.
It's smooth with lines about 1-2cm in length indented into the leather.

I'm not sure if it's the grain of the leather (possibly not calfskin?) or if it's decorative only.

Thanks for the replies Tomasso and Sproily.

Any ideas on how common this is?
Also, I ordered these to use as interview shoes. Would the texturing make these less appropriate than say, Park Avenues?

Also, again, if anyone has any ideas on the age of the Winfield style of Allen Edmonds it would be interesting to know how old these really are. AE customer service didn't seem too interested in making an in depth check (which is understandable).
Thanks,
Sam

The brogueing and texturing would certainly make them less formal than the PA's but they would be fine for an interview shoe in today's world, IMO.

I just ordered these shoes. They are described at "walnut grain". I have seen a pair at Nordstrom's and the grain is more pronounced than in the photo.

Those are some nice shoes KILO NOVEMBER.

Tomasso,
Would the brogueing be more important than whether they're bluchers or balmorals? I'm still trying to figure all of these little shoe rules out.

With these shoes, due to the age and that I've never seen this texture before I almost don't want to use the shoes too much. They seem pretty rare and are in pretty good condition. I wish Allen Edmonds had more info on old models on their site.

Again, if anyone has any ideas on age I'd love to know.

Thanks,
Sam

I would tend to think that brogueing detracts from formality more than lacing as it has its roots in country footwear; Also, practically speaking, lacing is less noticeable as it's generally covered by your trousers when standing.

For instance, I'd wear this blucher (sans tassels ;) ) with Black Tie rather than the balmorals below.

BTW, your shoes have blind or imitation brogueing which makes for a sleeker shoe as only one layer of leather is used.

Don't worry, the uppers look to be in good shape and you can always have them refurbished down the line by AE for like $100.

If you really, really need to know you should post your query (with lots of photos, inside and out) at AAAC where there are many AE aficionados, one of whom is the CEO of AE (member name: AllenEdmondsCEO).

So old? They have the modern soles. Nice shoes.
