All You Need to Know About Hat Etiquette

The “hat hair” issue has been discussed before so a google search of The Fedora Lounge should help. As for hat etiquette that’s been beat to death.

https://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/all-you-need-to-know-about-hat-etiquette.894/

Unless in an intimate building (someone else’s house), or a church, etc., I leave my hat on when indoors unless there is a place to safely put it. If a restaurant doesn’t provide a place for my hat it stays on my head. When shopping etc. it always stays on. Some people people get confused with military training where the cover is removed at the threshold of most all buildings, but even during the golden age of hat wearing it was expected that your hat stayed on in certain indoor venues.

Thanks for your reply.

Not criticizing you but the general moderation of forums....

MANY of these searched threads and the one you linked are not so concise. Lots of back and forth between friends etc...

Face it; there's not a whole lot to say about hats that hasn't been said. if a forum is the thrive it has to rehash certain topics to keep the new comer engaged.

Shouldn't the forum be about discussions not research?

I'm here trying to cultivate a deeper appreciation for finer hats and learn more than I can locally. Plus it's fun!

I frequent Telecaster and Stratocaster guitar forums and while guitars a bit broader than hats most of the topics have been addressed ad infinitum! But even the umpteenth thread about pick ups can elicit a unique response along the way. Plus it tends to inspire new directions.

Thanks again!

Perhaps this forum is ran differently from others you frequent. Here, we appreciate people putting in some effort to find easily found information on their own. We also discourage the creation of new threads where a closely related thread already exists.

You should expect a site moderator (called bartenders here) merge your thread into an existing thread; this happens all the time here so don’t take offense.

If you stick around you’ll see that the same questions are asked over and over and we rehash information that adds nothing new. Most of the really knowledgeable members (a group in which I am NOT included), don’t even bother to address such questions. Here, many would strongly disagree with your discussion over research proposition.

I hope you stick around. We do need new blood, but maybe you might consider accepting this forum as it is.

I agree to a point but follow the link provided in the first response and you'll find anything but a succinct answer.

Furthermore, the search term "hat" on a hat forum reveals more than a few hits! :D

But I get it! I'll learn! Thanks for taking the time to respond to me!

You have to work for the answers sometimes. I’ve had to put in hours myself, but it’s that kind of forum. If you have a question where you can’t find a ready answer you are encouraged to use the “Ask a Question, Get an Answer” thread.

The forum is a bit of a mess, but we do what we can to limit the clutter and not duplicate threads. Might check these threads for your answer too. We might get a bartender to merge them all at some point.

I agree with you. I'm new here too and find that trying to find basic info here is kind of clunky. Many of the threads have been running ten years so to find a particular bit of information in the "Dobbs Diner", for example, can be difficult at best. But I'm trying to make the best of it.

I've found that using Google and the delimiter "Fedora Lounge" yields better results than the search function within the forum itself. And I agree that many of the guitar forums are easier to navigate.

The search function here sucks to put it bluntly. Using Google along with the phrase fedora lounge helps. But you still have to wade through the invalid links to old photos, along with the numerous pages follied with rambling conversations between members that have nothing to do with the subject matter.

There ought to be a better way for new members to find information.

This has been discussed many times, including quite recently. There was a proposal to start a wiki page(s), but who is going to put in the time, effort, and shoulder the expense? I’m no kind of tech guy so I can only guess what would be required. We’d all be glad if you, or anyone else, stepped up and took the project on.

Well, most of us have been through the process. My first six months on this site was spent hoovering up the information in all of those old threads you are complaining about. During that process, I learned extensively about hats, manufacturing, advertising, and various other things. Additionally, I found it pleasurable to read the personalities and their discussions. I gleaned knowledge from Members who are not around any longer, or who only now drop in from time to time. Many of those folks knew/know tons, and their knowledge is captured in their posts. Not to mention, after a while you recognize the progression in knowledge and evolution of some of the older Members here. It's interesting to see what some of the folks here, who we impart mucho respect for due to their knowledge, thought and proclaimed ten years ago, when they were still learning.

Unlike where you seem to be coming from, I miss those first few months here, when I was "drinking from the fire hose" of hat knowledge. There are still some of the older threads, such as advertising threads, that I enjoy going back over, just to reread the posts.

Very well said Jim and very diplomatic.
Brent you too as well.
Far more tolerant than my abilities to respond to the repetitive observations and questions about the short comings of this lounge compared to this forum and that forum always by new members looking for a quick easy answer or one that agrees with their perception of whatever.
Hat etiquette...use your head...if you feel like it needs to come off, take it off. If you feel like it needs to stay on, leave it on. If you gotta worry about other’s perception of your choice, maybe you missed the point of hats. Imho
Lounge search function...not perfect..so what. If it’s too much trouble and diminishes the lounge experience...maybe you got off the bus at the wrong stop.
It’s always interesting to see who sticks and who doesn’t around here. Generally those who contribute, contain their complaints live and learn.
I’ll end this rambling folly by saying...when someone invites you to dinner it’s best not to complain about the menu. That’s just rude and boorish. And don’t be surprised if someone tells you about it. Especially a hungry Grandpa.

I like that analogy. There was another poster here recently that kept critiquing the Lounge forum and how it failed in comparison to some other music or instrument-related boards he was on. I enjoy music very much (at least some types) but have no talent for it; perhaps that ability takes a different mindset that doesn't translate well onto this board. But there are other musicians here that fit in well... so who knows?
