Three steps away? I'd assume the guy didn't want to be seen with me.

At any rate, a man who doesn't automatically take the street side isn't rude, he's just probably never heard of the practice. I didn't know anyone still did this.

As I recall, men put themselves between the street and a lady to protect the lady from out-of-control horses. Not the etiquette needs a practical purpose. I admire good manners as much as the next person, but I think I'd find this particular practice affected in this day and age.

I agree. Holding a door, nice. But protecting from wayward horses or cars is a bit of a stretch. An out of control is unlikely to hit one person and not another. as for being splashed from the street, how often does that really happen. In this day and age, most roads are in pretty good shape, and again, a big puddle splash is likely to get both wet. Seems pointless. I am all about behavior taht makes people feel better or prevents rudeness. but random affectation for its own sake seems silly. In fact, in earlier days, it was on the inside, lest the lady be splashed with the unwelcome contents of a chamber pot. So, outside and protect her from mud, or inside and protect her from worse. It is a toss up.

The only thing I can really think of that I think would be important is between a lady and a zombie. But who knows what direction they may come from?

Leave you all alone for a minute...and it goes from a 'nicety' to how to protect a date from zombies....

D, who actually knows how to do the zombie thing herself....but still thinks its -nice- to have a gent -unaffectedly- move to the road side of the sidewalk.

Yes, if it's done, it should be seamless. We've seen what offering explanations leads to.

Acronyms for threadarchists

So, dear reader, we find another charming thread being hijacked by the Wacky/Affectation/Thread-Killer/Undead/Zombie Party(W.A.T.K.U.Z).. shakeshead shakeshead shakeshead [bad]

Perhaps this dastardly attempt at derailing those gentler souls who fail to meet the anarchistic stylings of the Fedora Lounge Agents Provocateurs (F.L.A.P). will not succeed.

Anachronistically yours. :cool2:

I thought it was funny. :)

Seriously, I think that all these things (except for the flying poop) account for sidewalks being set far from the street in older neighborhoods.

And I've known for years that there is plenty of hope for young people. My source of information? The polite and gentle young guys I dance with.

In Today's episode of youth doing lovely gestures...

I pass an old movie theatre on the way home, and while they do not regularly play films there anymore, you do still see things on the Marquee....

Birthday Wishes, the Rocky Horror at midnight notice....etc

So I was passing by there the other day...and saw.

No matter the rate at which I see such display (which I feel is not often enough), I always smile on the inside. The day I meet a gentleman who will do the same for me...

But, hey, at least a guy friend of mine said he would push me out of the way of a moving automobile (I was in heels discussing the possibility of my getting hit as I could only walk in small steps and slowly). I'll take what I can get. lol
