Putting his money where his mouth is - thats good to see.

He is HILARIOUS on 30 ROCK. Baldwin is even funnier than NBC's other comic genius - Donald Trump!

Alec Baldwin rules! Glengary Glen Ross anyone?
Baldwin's cameo in Glangary Glen Ross is known as one of the best in movie history. If anybody hasn't seen it, do yourself a favor and check it out.

Does anyone know if it is true that Baldwin's role was not in the original play but written for the film?

It was written for Baldwin, just for the film. I have seen the play and it really needs that scene. The pressure that is put on these salesmen by the Baldwin character truly adds to the desparation of their situation.

Honorable thing to do, but it sounds like little more than a publicity stunt.

He could have just as easily given the money to them without letting anyone know where it was coming from.

I liked his role in the Aviator. It suited his personality. However, to see him portray Jimmy Doolittle in Pearl Harbor turns my stomach. He's the wrong man for the role and the portrayal captured absolutely none of who Jimmy Doolittle was, a humble, friendly, generous man who was well-liked by those who served with him. Baldwin's Doolittle was a loudmouthed jerk, a perfect counterpart to Ben Affleck's usual role as a overinflated jock.

Reminds me of an old story.

1 “Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2 Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 3 But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly. Matthew 6:1-4, NKJV.

If Alec Baldwin paid for my college, I'd have shouted it from every rooftop in town.

And maybe a gesture like this will spur someone else to do something like it.

I dont care if got publicty for it or if he's a foul mouth jerk - someone who would have otherwise gone without is better off today because of Baldwin.

Jeez - what a bunch of killjoys!

Don't necessarily like all his politics, but I like his acting and range.

Agreed on all points. His off screen lines fall far short of his on screen dialog. He also has always been a sharp dresser...even during ugly decades. In fact, we have an article in issue #2 of Classic Style on him.

I like this kind of news

Ditto. If it's a publicity stunt, I'd like to see more publicity stunts from celebrities. It is very difficult to find out which performers go over to entertain our troops, what with all the important news about Britney forgetting to go to KMart to replenish her underwear drawer. My friend's spouse is serving in Iraq and they have seen Kid Rock and David Allan Grier so far. Yet my dad says it's not like during Vietnam when it was news when stars went to do USO shows and everyone heard about it. Paying a soldier's tuition is a nice gesture for Alex Baldwin. It's no more blowing his own horn than donors' names listed in any charitable organization's newsletters.

Baldwin, like Clooney and a few other stars, has always given me a sense of "genuineness" regardless of his politics. He may believe differently than I but it never appears to be bandwagon jumping, rather a consistant part of his personal philosophy.

If that is indeed the case then I don't see any reason to denigrate this decision as a publicity stunt, it's just something he chose to do. Did he have a political motive in releasing/allowing the information to be released?

Maybe, but so what? That is also consistant for someone against some current events and officials and doesn't make the gesture any less nice.
