On the off chance that there is another nut on here who is interested in such things ……

As spring advances in the southern hemisphere, the dividing line between a “very high” (10) and an “extreme” (11) UV index in Australia has crept down to about 30° S. In the north, there are areas where the index is already 14.

This is a bit frightening to a pasty-white person, who lives where the index seldom goes above 9.

Time to hide under a big hat in Northern Australia.

I have an interest in this because of two good friends who developed melanoma. One has been dead since 2004. The other has been under treatment for two or three years, and is “stable”.

The Riverina is a is a Coober Pedy with a wider brim, and the Territory is a Cattleman with a wider brim.

The Cattleman is the other one I've been considering for a new warm-weather felt, though I rather wish it had the bigger vents of the Territory (if it did, I'd probably have bought one already. I am looking at the greys, though it'll be a slightly more expensive import for me as the UK supplier only supplies them in fawn). The Territory is the real contender for a new khaki safari-style hat for me. I'm pretty much sold on that (and at least I can get that from the UK supplier) - your experience reported here has been really helpful. Now I just have to figure out the funding...

I went with the Warrego for my khaki coloured hat and the Territory for a black hat. Both work great for sun and rain
