Akubra Sydney

Hello All,

I’ll get straight to the point. I’m interested in the Akubra Sydney.

I don’t own an Akubra.

I’ve done lots of research online. It seems they’re pretty darn rugged. That’s what I’m looking for, yet, I’m anxious about the weight of the felt when it comes to the Sydney. I love the dimensions of it. I’m just worried that it’s too soft? Some folks say they have a hard time getting it to hold a crease? My question is, will it hold or not? Will the bash just pop out constantly? What about when it gets wet? Will I need to re shape it every time?

I have a Stetson Roadster and I like it. A lot. Would that Royal Deluxe felt be comparable to the weight and hold of the Sydney? I don’t want to beat the snot out of it but I want to be able to wear it without worrying about inclement weather.

I’m not interested in the Akubra Fed or the Stylemaster. I’d go with a Campdraft as my second choice but I’m leaning real hard toward a Sydney... I need to hear from some folks with first hand accounts!

Anyone with information on this specific hat, I’d greatly appreciate the input.

Pics of it on wouldn’t be bad either!

Cheers!

I have an Akubra Sydney in Regency Fawn. It is a wonderful hat. It took my diamond bash dry very well. After it got rained on I refined the crease a little more. It has yet to pop out. The Stylemaster is a very good hat as well. The dimensions are the same as the Sydney it just does not come in an open crown. The felts feel the same to me in both hats, Imperial quality.

I started asking questions on page 348 about the Sydney. Great Akubra information and pictures as well.

Here are some pictures of my Sydney and Stylemaster.

I have this same hat and I concur....except I have never gotten it wet. Great hat for the money. I have one of the earlier versions from 1999, called the Madison back then. It has held up well over the years.

Thanks 1967Cougar390 and belfastboy!

Just the kind of information I needed. I don’t think I realized the Stylemaster had the same dimensions as the Sydney. I like the idea of an Open crown that I can bash to my liking by myself! Doesn’t the Stylemaster have a bound edge? Does the Sydney have a bound edge or a raw edge?

Hey, 1967Cougar390, I’m slightly colorblind, how is the Regency Fawn color? That’s what I was considering. It’s tough for me to get a real feel for these felt colors online alone. I know more often than not each color has multiple shades in it. Is it like a light brownish tan?

Thanks again Gents!
Cheers

To my eye the Regency Fawn look tan with a grey look to it. The Sydney is a raw edge and the Stylemaster has a bound edge. I re-bashed the Stylemaster from a C crown or teardrop to a diamond. It was quite easy. The Carbon Grey Stylemaster is a great dark grey color. I love it’s look. I posted pictures of the Sydney and Stylemaster in the Akubra Overload thread.

Thank you Sir!
I was just reading through the overload posts. I thought the Sydney had a raw edge but I was second guessing myself due to the mentioned comparison to the Stylemaster. I like the raw edge and the open crown. I had wanted an LL Bean Moose River Stetson (raw edge) until I had one in my hands. It felt like S&@T! I don’t think the quality is there. The Sydney should serve me well.

Cheers

The newer Sydney is a thicker felt like the current Stylemaster. The older Sydney was of a thinner felt and sometimes had a hard time holding the bash. I have both generations and the newer one is thicker and easier to bash. It is a good sturdy hat, but hey it's an Akubra!

Hello, MCrider
Thank you for your input regarding the Akubra Sydney. I apologize for the long response time. As I’m sure you’re aware, things are a bit crazy these days. The information is appreciated though. Do you own a Sydney? If so, any pics? Still haven’t decided...
Cheers!
