Akubra Overload

All of my Akubra’s seam to fit true to size. Very slight differences if any at all. I have two Fed IV’s, three Stylemaster’s, and one Sydney all size 61 (7 5/8). I purchased all of them from The Hattery (hatsdirect.com) except the Sydney (David Morgan). I know that Naomi and Trudi at The Hattery measure each hat before shipping to check the accuracy of sizing. I’ve sweat in and had all of my Akubra’s wet by rain (even heavy downpours) and they still fit perfect. Not to loose and not too tight.

Do you buy an Akubra true to size or upsize to get the shrinking process correct? I have only held off buying an Akubra because it will be my first and the thought of a potential return process though the mail bothers me.

Back when I was on the search for my first "real" hat (i.e., not a cheap factory pressed wool piece of junk) my head measurement was almost exactly 60 cm, so that's the size I ordered. The hat, an Akubra Fed IV, was a little oversized when it arrived, but wearing it (and sweating in it) for a few days made the sweatband shrink down to a nice comfortable fit; not too snug nor too loose. So regardless of who made/makes the hat I'm interested in, I've always ordered the same size and that has, for the most part, worked out well for me.

That being said, the prevalent wisdom is to order the larger size if your head measurement is between sizes; it's much easier to add a little padding behind the sweatband if necessary than it is to stretch a hat half a size or more. Also, ovality (the shape of your head) can be a concern, but my head is just s-l-i-g-h-t-l-y wider than a regular oval, so the hat's ovality has not been a concern for me unless it was manufactured as a long or extra-long oval. Another member who is a long or extra-long oval can probably advise you on that if necessary.

Thank you for all the replies. I am sporting a 7 3/8 Long Oval and have been able tame a Stetson to fit well though daily wear. A Camp Draft (most likely) is in my future, and I am feeling more confident about a 59.

Really like that one in that color, but alas, they no longer make it. I ended up ordering a Federation IV in the Carbon Gray, slightly narrower brim and un bound. wish it were bound but it is what it is. I considered a Stylemaster, but the brim in 1/4" narrower the only plus being bound. The larger brim won out .

The Hattery Katoomba. The Fedora is nice. Felt is pretty stiff but will probably soften up with use and a little rain. A quick bash for going out in the woods. I actually expected the hat to be a little smaller overall based on looking at pics and videos of it.

I like it! That’s a great color. Naomi and Trudi have a wonderful touch of class with their handwritten personalized notes. That’s one of the reasons I’ve been a repeat customer. Wear your Fedora in good health. Stay safe.

Ok had another Akubra show up late today, a Kentucky Rancher in the dark fawn. It was the last I could find in 58. Could not find a 59 to have extra room for shrinkage. I bought it from the Australian Hat Outlet in Anderson, California. Their website showed several sizes in stock but I called to make sure. They did have one so I placed the order over the weekend and it was here today. The lady I talked to was very nice and she sent some hat care information with a poem or song lyric "Me old Akubra Hat". It also had a hand written note on it. I will try to find a way to scan it or photograph it so its legible and post it. The dark fawn is very close to the burnt oak but just a little lighter. Kind of a rich milk chocolate color.

I finally got my Silverbelly CampDraft Heritage. Got around to creasing it yesterday. Went with a cattleman's crease on this one. I now have three of these Campdrafts all creased differently.

Thats a good looking hat @Scooterz I saw that one on one of the sites that sells Akubra's and thought it was interesting. Nice color.

I think the Sand color is still being offered but I wanted the dark brown. I don't normally wear full blown westerns much, except for the old style teardrop open roads. I do have a couple of modern open roads with cattleman's crease. I think I am going to really like this Akubra western a lot and I can wear it in bad weather with no worry about the color running in the rain. I believe I have covered my dark brown all weather hat needs with the fedora and this rancher hat. I plan to wear them out outdoors in the woods and such.

So I have been telling myself that I have enough Akubra hats, but I still find myself checking out the Akubra sites and the Lounge. The hat I always wanted was the Kiandra. I never got one as there were always other hats I wanted more and once I was finally ready to order one it was gone. I couldn't find it anywhere, seems it had been discontinued. Yesterday I sent a note to Naomi and Trudi at the Hattery and here is the response.

Akubra have recently discontinued the Kiandra from their range BUT we are now having it produced exclusively for us in the Loden colour - YAY!

Naomi and Trudi are truly nice ladies. I have placed a couple of calls to down under and received fabulous customer service each time. I am really enjoying the three Campdrafts and they helped me get the right size and pointed me in the right direction on items that were getting in short supply.

Yes sir, I use Pecard on mine. No science to it, just whenever I think of it. Mine are all in good shape, some I’ve had for 15 years or so.
