Simple. If I had a hat that took the type of bash that we were discussing and it ended up looking like those in the pics and I was going out for an semi formal evening affair dressed in a nicely pressed dark suit and starched dress shirt and necktie...
I wouldn't wear that particular hat. I would chose a different hat with cleaner crisper more uniform and well formed creases and pinches.

Shoot, just wearing a nice hat, crinkled or not, is more dressy than most men these days go for.

That is exactly how nice vintage travel weight felt reacts to pinches.
The felt on these hats is very thin and very dense .
When pinched or poked that is how it reacts... 100%
Here are a couple examples of my hats
a Dobbs Cross Country and a Dobbs Westward ... both have this type felt and what you see happened when I took my middle finger and thumb over the peak and gave them a tap.... nothing more.
I have many hats that react this way when poked... a Knox or two and a couple Borsalino as well...in my opinion this is the best Felt you can find.
It sounds to me like you have simply not experienced this felt.... which is not uncommon because it is becoming more and more rare due to it being so thin and not surviving time and wear.
I love the look and it is 100% legit and beautiful .
Cheap ? not a chance ... that is what it's all about

I know @1mach1 @alanfgag and @Short Balding Guy all have hats that react this way

Even though I own a 1920's Stetson Homburg Excellent Quality, a late 1950's - early 1960's Borsalino Alessandra both in excellent condition; and a 1950's Knox Fifteen among others, luckily for me they don't knuckle when pinched, poked or tapped with a finger. I'm just not a fan of the cottage cheese look. Not wanting to be argumentative I'll let this be my final comment.

I see both sides to this. My brain is wired to want symmetry in things. Something looks off to my brain if it doesn't look straight, or even.

But... I do wear mix-n-match styles. It started in high school, I guess, but I'd wear a silk tie with a denim jacket and some Levi's, a nice fur felt fedora with a white t-shirt and working man's suspenders. Western boots and hat with a Hawaiian shirt and dress slacks.

But I like my creases symmetrical; not necessarily tight, hard creases but I like them even.

Isn't that what makes fashion cool? You get to choose your style, your persona.

Well,
The lightweight TONAK modern felt I use has that effect.
I jab one finger and it just goes that way.
Depends from color to color as well.

I have a few 1940's felts left and they all bash in that uneven way, but you can smooth it out in 3 seconds as well.

I think it's your hands as well, I'm quite flowy ( not sure that's the word when you get my drift) when I put creases in. But other are not.

The mister hardly ever put his in but when he does they are quite rough and asymmetrical.

I guess it's another case of les gouts et les couleurs...

I disagree. In my opinion, by far the most important consideration is whether one wants to use courier companies which are infamous for scamming consumers by fabricating illegitimate charges on cross-border shipments, or if one instead wants to use the post office system which does not fabricate illegitimate charges. Since I am loathe to give one red scent to scammers, I always use the postal system whenever possible (and if not possible, then I probably won't do any business with the company that doesn't offer that option).

To answer LabRat 101's question, the best choice from the hatsdirect.com site is "Standard shipping" because that option uses the postal system.

I live in Canada and my experience mirrors Gangster's response. If they won't ship via Post Office I won't buy it. If it comes via the Post it comes straight to my house, no duties, no taxes, no handling charges that I have been forced to pay by Courier companies that on a few occasions have cost almost as much as the item. I am a big fan of the Postal Service, both Canadian and US. And no I don't have relatives that work for the system!

My Akubra CD is the Fedora Lounge version. Never had any buyers remorse about this hat. Workhorse of a hat. Weather has just made the felt easier to crease and mold. Love the hat for my uses. I like to wear this hat with a flatter flange for protection (demonstrated in the below pic). Blue grass is a color that works for me.

It is my only Akubra. So far.

Next week will mark two months since placing the order for my BGGCD. So I'm hoping I get an email soon telling me that it's shipped. The wait is killing me.

And I'll echo both sentiments above. Perhaps this is an issue unique to Canada, but one should NEVER agree to have an international package delivered by UPS here.

UPS is a vast criminal organization specializing in "fee" shakedowns. In all seriousness, I do not understand why they are permitted to operate here.

I can't take credit, that bash was done by the salesman at Byrnie Utz where the hat was purchased. Though I am looking forward to putting the bash in my BGGCD when it finally arrives.
