My new moonstone Fed IV Deluxe

Here's a few pix of the moonstone Fed IV I scored on eBay a few weeks ago (sorry about the lousy image quality). I'm still messing with the bash. It came with a soft c-crown that I'm trying to sharpen up. Also, the previous owner put in the foam pads to size it down a bit from a full 60. It fits, but a tad snugger than I'd like. But due to the adhesive, it looks like stripping out the pads will screw up the lining, so I think I'm going to have to shave them down with a sharp blade -- all sins to be hidden by the sweatband ... :D

Got the response from Nungar Trading Company today regarding shipping. To the US, depending on the service you pick, it is between $40-$55. Yikes!
They also informed me that the Mexican model has been discontinued, so I guess their sites not that up-to-date, either [huh]. I guess I'll be sticking with HatsDirect, EverythingAustralian, DavidMorgan and Noggintops for my Akubra needs lol...

It is important to check out the validity of the seller. I hastily ordered a Stylemaster from http://www.australiangear.com/cartnew/ (because they have free shipping) last week and after a few days received an email telling me they are out of stock in my size and are waiting for a shipment this week. It didn't say that when I ordered........ I don't like web sites that are not updated.

That can be annoying, but with free shipping, your getting a good deal on the Stylemaster. As long as they come through for you, I'd say it's worth the wait. Hope it works out well.

Same thing happened to me at AG -- but within a week, I was notified that my Stylemaster had shipped. I expect it to arrive within the next few days. Meanwhile, I just put in an order with them for a silverbelly Campdraft, for which they tell you upfront it's an 11-week wait, which is the norm right now.

What hat is that at 1:00 into the video? Looks like a Squatter, but the crown looks too tall.

All three hats on the table are Squatters in MidFawn.

Have a look at that beautiful Overlander in Sand on the right side. First thing I saw when I opened the link! There's a Lightning Ridge in heritage fawn just under it. I think I see a great looking Pilbara on the very left side as well.

Thanks for posting this vid. I'm like a kid watching a video of a candy store lol!

Neophyte,
Take another look :) NONE of the hats has a bound brim :) Looks more like the Sydney as sold by DM in what he calls Regency Fawn :)

You are welcome. That wall of hats behind them is pretty tempting, isn't it? If you are ever in the area, a stop by the retail store is a blast. David is there to talk about Akubra and whip making and anything else you bring up with a great sense of humor while he hands you different hats to try on. Incredible customer service to boot.

Are we looking at the same video? The one I'm talking about is titled "care of quality furfelts" where he handles the Cattleman until 1:00 min. in. Then picks up something that looks like a Squatter. In a video about measuring your head, there are 3 Sydneys on the table.

Ah, I see.

I apologize for misleading everyone. Monbla, you are correct. The brims are too small, there's too much taper, and no bound brim; obviously the Sydney :).

As for you, Chuck, I can't believe you don't recognize your own lid. That right there is a Moonstone Akubra Squatter. I recognize that crease as one of the optional shaping services offered by DavidMorgan. If you take a look at their Squatter page and look at the crease, and in particular the 360 degree rotating pic, you will undoubtedly draw the same conclusion.

Bebop, I wish I were ever in the area...but finding an occasion to travel from the Southeast to the far Northwest...not really seeing that happening. Damn!

Neo, that Squatter's crown looks huge compared to mine. My e-bay find Squatter is not a David Morgan Squatter as there are no vent holes. The crown on mine doesn't seem that massive. So, I don't recognize it.

Indeed, it has been observed multiple times (ESPECIALLY in the case of FatDutchMan's fawn Squatter) that the DavidMorgan Squatters seem to have a somewhat (read: very) bulbous crown when compared to, say, the HatsDirect/EverythingAustralian variety. Not much research has gone into this, but it HAS been noted several times.

I apologize, Chuck. I keep forgetting that your Squatter was an ebay find (and a great one at that, I still go back to look at that hat sometimes :)).

I have a DM Squatter and I think this "bulbouse" thing about the crown is based on crease and camera angle :) I took mine, which is creased VERY similar to the Moonstone one above and folks, I could see NO difference in the crowns shape that would lead me to call it "bulbouse". BTW, the crown on my Bushman is virtually identical in size and shape and I have it creased the SAME as my Squatter and they look the same !! JMHO :)

...

You're right, I've looked at that 360 degree turn many times. So many times, that I became proficient at pausing the loop at various stages to look at every angle. In fact, those images are the reason I wanted a Squatter. I just happened to find one on e-bay. I occasionally look at that Squatter on DM's site and wonder why mine really doesn't look as bold as that 360 one.

If I remember, FatDutcman's was a size larger, which might also add to the bulbousity. The Squatter I found was my normal Akubra size 59, but it was snug front and back. I had to stretch it over the knee to get it to fit better. Ron (HD) suggested that and said the crown of the Squatter was round unlike the Campdraft and the Fed. My mystery Squatter is also Imperial felt and has a salmon (?) or peach (?) colored liner. I have no clue of its lineage. Fits pretty well now after stretching. That may have added front and back taper in comparison with the DM Squatter.

My Stylemaster's here!

Just got my Stylemaster from AustralianGear.com. It's my first (1) Imperial felt, (2) pre-bashed Akubra, (3) finished-edge hat and (4) purchase direct from Down Under (my Feds came from eBay). I really like the carbon grey -- much darker than moonstone; it should go well with blues and blacks. The felt seems softer to the touch than my Heritage Feds. The crease is not quite what I expected, based on the online photos, but it looks good on. I'll try to post a couple noggin shots soon.

In all, pleased with the purchase, though I thought it odd that it was shipped in a plain box with no hat insert. Still, came through unscathed, and I'm looking forward to getting my Campdraft from AG, probably sometime in January. But I wish I'd waited another week to order the CD, since the Stylemaster came with a 5% off coupon for my next purchase. Oh, well ... guess I gotta buy another Akubra ... :p
