Akubra Overload

Since I have never paid attention to the Akbura threads until now, I now see that I put my hat in the wrong place.

So, here is my Akubra Pastoralist that came in last week.

Felt is nice and supple, almost thin, but resilient and holds shape perfectly. The box came totally smashed flat and the hat was completely smashed, too. But it popped back into shape perfectly well.

It is a pretty bluish/gray which is a nice surprise because the bad ebay photo made it look tan. The photos below are only a bit lighter than the actual color. On another thread we all came to a consensus that it is Akubra's Moonstone color and that this one was made specifically for the company that sold it and is not a standard Akubra offering.

The pinch is really short, but deep. Never seen a pinch like that. But it looks OK. Also I imagined that I would get rid of the leather hat band and put on a ribbon, but now that I see it... I think I like it. I am leaving it this way.

I have to say, I am very happy with her.

Notice it is an American size tag. Is this common for an Aussie hat? I never had an Aussie hat before.

For those of you that remember that period of daily transformations of my Tawny Campdraft, here's the most recent transformation. It's sort of like a slanted gus/cattleman hybrid. I call it a "Cattlegus." ;) I really like it!

Nice work. If the Campdraft had some more brim to go with it, it'd make a heck of a Western.

Thanks! I was thinking the same thing the whole time I was working on it. I made the crease really low (doesn't seem evident in the photo somehow) to bring it into proportion with the brim, but I had to work at it.

That's very interesting, the size tag. DM's Bushman , which is a retailer specific model Akubra makes comes with an Aussie size tag. It might be an indication of it's age as the size tag in my 30 yo Bushman is gone now and I do not recall if it was different than the new ones in current Akubra's. You've got a unique one of a kind it looks like :)

M.V. I like it on you very much. It should hold up in the fowl weather quite well also. I like the dents in the front.

That's a pretty good find, Vulgus. It looks like a Stylemaster crown but with the Squatter brim. Very unique hat! Looks great in the snow bein' an Akubra, though! Great find on that one!

Well, the brim does look a bit short for the style, but it's obvious the Campdraft crown is versatile enough to hold a few versions. Have to say the Akubra's "Boss of the Plains" seems to have enough brim to put that crown crease into a good balance with the hat overall (talking as a Western here) - still, it's very difficult to find a "Boss of the Plains" nowadays. But man, nice job on the re-crease - cause I know that Campdraft has gone through quite a few re-creases. Again, nice work on matching that particular crown style!

Just won an auction for a black Akubra snowy river, used, for 38 bucks shipped. More brim than I prefer for a city hat, but I was looking for a "walk through the woods" hat, and I think/hope this is the one. All the pictures I see of snowy rivers have a leather band, this one seems to have been changed to a thin ribbon (or it is a retailer specific model, i'm not sure which).

Have my fingers crossed that it will look good, pictures weren't perfect studio shots, and are tough that way sometimes, but I think I might have gotten a pretty good deal. Pics when it arrives.

I believe that it has an American size tag because the store it comes from is/was in Pennsylvania. I checked Google Maps to be sure, and the Outback Trading Co. this hat came from is/was in Oxford, PA.

The Bushman is sold ONLY in a U.S. store, David Morgan up in Seattle, is SPECIFIC to them ONLY and comes with an AUSTRALIAN size tag :) I think his tag would be more of an indication of WHEN the hat was produced. The size tags on all currently produced Akubra's matches the colors used in the current logo.

This nearly took my breath away. I opened a box with hat I had won on Ebay. The price was - well - a giveaway. It is brand spanking new with the tags! I'm amazed. Perhaps someone can tell me what it is. The sweatband says it is a Flinders (named after Matthew Flinders) but when I search the australian sites the Flinders is a black hat with a telescope crease. I went to the to the Outback Trading Company site but this hat isn't shown there. It was apparently purchased from JJ's Hat Center in New York. the brim is 3 1/8" and is bound. The crown is 4 3/4" at the high point. It fits perfectly. My lucky day.

It looks like a proprietary version of the Coober Peddy minus the vent eylets made for Outback Trading Co. The Bushman is a proprietary model made for David Morgan so this one is probably like that. You've got a one of a kind, and from the size tag design a newer hat than your other Akubra. The new Akubra's have that same size tag on them. Nice, nice find :) Wear that puppy ANYWHERE , in ANY WEATHER, it's an Akubra :)

Hard to say. It has a little more crown and a little less brim than the Coober Pedy. It is quite stiff - even stiffer than my Open Road but it feels great on the noggin. It is a very cool hat. This was easily the best Ebay buy I've ever made.

That is one of THE coolest Akubras I've ever seen. I don't know what it is, but you seem to have a rare Akubra there.

Thanks, Neo. Actually it is very similar to my Stetson Sturgis but with a lighter color and better felt quality. I'm glad I ordered the Mike Moore custom in gray or I'd be swimming in these things. ;)
