Why do you ask?
Neophyte, you might consider the Stetson straw Whippet. They're a nice looking, yet affordable straw. I read over in the dedicated thread that folks have/are getting them from the outlet in Garland, Texas for around $40 shipped.

Thanks Mr. E. I had a feeling it would be a nice hat after seeing the rest of DM's stock. Thanks for the pic as well!

I think I know what hat I want now :).

Thanks for the info. I was planning on ordering some other stuff from DM anyway, so that's why I was looking at that hat. I'll look at the whippet, though, because I do like how it looks. Thank you!

That's one of the nicest Boss of the Plains hats I've seen, it's got a great, yet perfectly formed telescope crown! What is the height of it, may I ask, and what exactly is the brim width? I am aware of the fact that the Boss of the Plains is a high crowned hat to begin with, open crowned and all... what were you able to reduce it to?

Eventually, I'll be considering a western or outback styled hat.

Hi

I have a Sun Body hat, styled in classic fedora with a Maroon ribbon and six vent holes in it. The Sunbodys are tougher than a regular panama. For next year, I think I'll get several of Panama Bob's least expensive hats in several different shapes, they're about $40, so if (and when) I screw one up, I have a few more.

The crown hight is between 4 3/4 and 5 inches. The brim with is 3 1/2 inches. Thanks for your comments.

Good news, everybody! The two week reblocking process is finally over, and my Bluegrass Green Akubra Campdraft was shipped out early this morning, and should arrive sometime early next week!

Cattleman

Here is a used cattleman I picked up off of ebay for a more relaxed look. It doesn't have a liner, just a sticker directly on the felt. It's a 7 3/8 but must have shrunk quite a bit as it's a little tight. It's going to get the hat jack for a slight adjustment next.

That's a nice Cattleman you've got there! It looks just as good as new to me, though I've never personally handled or seen one. Just website photos. That would make a great sun hat indeed!

Thanks. It was a 7 3/8 (my normal size) and a bit tight. I put it on the hat stretcher after wetting the band and now it fits great.

Rodkins that's a very nice Cattleman. I just got mine last week from Hatsdirect size 7 3/4 LO. I like mine a lot, though I've not worn it much yet. Yours looks good and looks good on you.

Thanks guys. I can't wait to get some more use out of this one. I think it's a great central florida hat. I feel very comfortable in it - more so now that I stretched it back out a bit.

I love the Cattleman. I think the the Aussie's have out cowboyed the cowboys with the Cattleman. Without question better than what we see on the North American rodeo circuit these days.

:D

Quite a compliment! I have had a lifelong fascination with Australia. Once, when I changed schools I almost went into the first day of school faking an Australian accent but thought better of it knowing I'd have to keep it up or else be the butt of a million jokes. :p  :D

Somewhat off topic, but apparently, to most people, I have an accent. I've had multiple people say to me that I have one, after I spoke to them for whatever reason. I was born in, and live in southern California, and I often hear from others that I sound somewhat British or European (if not "British," usually "French," "Italian," or "German" comments)... it doesn't bother me though, I get the impression that some people think that's a part of what makes me unique. At the least, I just accept it as one of my quirks.

Back to the Akubra topic, I think I would definitely consider it a compliment, the Australian comment, while wearing that Cattleman. It is, after all, a traditional Australian hat.

What exactly do you mean, are you talking about those, mostly silverbelly/off-white colored cowboy hats with the cattleman's crease that many rodeo riders wear? I like the look, but I can agree to the look being pretty overdone in western circles. I occasionally spot the second most common hat, the black hat, and on rare occasions, a brown or more apparent tan one.
