Akubra Colors - Who is the Akubra Expert here

I recently got an Akubra Pastoralist and I had thought it was their Bluegrass Green color.

Felt is nice and supple, almost thin, but resilient and holds shape perfectly. The box came totally smashed flat and the hat was completely smashed, too. But it popped back into shape perfectly well.

It is a pretty bluish/gray which is a nice surprise because the bad ebay photo made it look tan. The photos below are only a bit lighter than the actual color. I don't see even a hint of green in this color.

Several loungers have told me that this bluish gray is not Akubra's Bluegrass Green color, though. Does anyone know if Akubra has a blue/gray color that it has discontinued?

I am not familiar with Akubra at all. This is the first hat I've got from them.

I recall posting a link to a website in Australia that hadn't updated its catalogue in quite a while (years, in fact), and mislead several of us into thinking that they had several discontinued colors.

Allow me to search for this website, as it might provide a clue as to the color of your new Akubra.

You may have a model made specifically for that retailer but named the same as an Aussie market model. An example of something similar would be the Bushman as sold by David Morgan in Seattle. It is NOT a production model as shown by Akubra nor any of the Aussie retailers that sell on the internet. It's color, Nulabor Tan, is NOT used on any of the Akubra's sold elsewhere nor is it listed in the Akubra color chart. It's strictly a single model specific color made for ONE retailer and ONE style . Your "Pastoralist" is different from the hat as listed and shown by Akubra or other Aussie retailers. I've attached a pic from Valley Country, an Aussie internet retailer of Akubra's and as you can see, it comes ONLY in a round Telescope crown, with a double cord braided leather hat band with braided adjustment knots. This is the current available model of the Pastoralist and I would say you have a one-off retailer specific model named and based on the Akubra Pastoralist. Akubra does not show any color except Silverbelly that comes close to your hats felt that I can find. Looks like you have a unique and special Akubra!! :)

I wonder why Akubra doesn't put the color (and style) on a tag under the sweatband. That sure would make it easier on you guys.

This freakin' hat is driving me crazy...I found the online site I was talking about, The Hat Store. Your hat's color looks to me like something in between Akubra's Glen Grey and Sky Grey colors...The crown is also very close, if not exactly, of the same style as the Stockman/Cattleman/Territory/Snowy River family, though without ventilation holes.

This...thing...is definitely not a Pastoralist. Very, very perplexing...

Hmmm. Interesting, gentlemen. Thanks for the info thus far. Seems I have a sort of orphan hat, here!

After looking at your pics of your hat I think it had the round telescope crown originally and was changed by it's previous owner to a sort of teardrop pinch front hat. Not a hard thing to do with most Akubra's and a liberal dose of steam :) And the more I look at it I would say it is a variation of what some would call Silverbelly JMHO :)

I'm not so sure. MV's hat looks to be a snap-brim hat, and the crease in the crown is VERY similar to such hats as the Akubra Stockman, Cattleman, and Snowy River.

with a good hat steamer and skill, THAT is NOT a hard crease to put in a hat. I agree, it looks a lot like the Aussie Cattleman crease, which I have on my Cattleman but after it's 3 dunkings in the stock tank and my handling it I have changed the crease somewhat and it was not hard to do! As far as the snap brim, some more steam, and snap the back up and you have his hat. JMHO :)

The brim is def. a snap. It works up and down just like any other fedora. The felt is lite and pliable but resilient.

It is possible that the previous owner changed the crown, of course. But whoever did it, it was done expertly because there is no hint at all the that the crown was ever in any other shape. It is very well blocked, at least.

Also, it is definitely a Pastorialist. Says so on the sweatband...

It's a Pastoralist for sure !! :) Measure the brim ( bottom side) as the listing by Akubra for the brim size is 73mm/2.874" . No matter what color it is, it's a DAMN NICE hat !! Welcome to the wonderful world of Akubra :)

I agree. From the light grey color to the snap brim to the crease, that is one unique Akubra, and a really nice hat! Congrats :eusa_clap.

I would say that it does measure as above. Looking at it, the brim is nearly 3 inches.

Looks like you have a one of a kind Pastoralist !! :) Enjoy it and welcome to the world of Akubra !! If you wanted to pursue your inquiries further you might want to contact some of the members in OZ. :) If it were mine I'd describe the color as a variation on Silverbelly, but definately NOT the Bluegrass Green as it was sold as :) Now go get it wet in the rain and find out about the Akubra mystique :)

Onward thru the Fog:)

Silverbelly is a light tan. Could it actually be Moonstone? Looks like Moonstone from your post on the Camp Draft thread where you have it on.

Does look similar to Chuck's color.

Looks like a hybrid somewhere in between.
Glen-Fawn?
Tawny-Grey?
Blueglane Fawny Grass?

How do you like the reflection looking back at you when wearing it, Mobile?

I guess I could see how it might be "moonstone." Very similar if the photo colors of Chuck's hat is close to what it actually looks like.

As to how I like it....

:eusa_clap:eusa_clap SHARP, Mobile. Very sharp! Congrats on the find!

You know, I'm wondering if the Pastoralist isn't just a telescoped Squatter in other colors. Chuck, what's the inside of your hat actually say on the band?
