Not sure what the name for the color is or if they even have one, but it's a chocolate brown. The ribbon sometimes looks like it has a tint of rust red in the chocolate.

I believe it was called mid brown. That colour in the Campdraft was discontinued a few years back. Chocolate is a good description

My mid-brown looks olive-ish in sunlight. Anybody interested in it &/or Glen Grey in 61cm let me know via PM. They are box queens for me.

Alas, three sizes is a bit too much to attempt to shrink.
Anybody with the same colored CDs in 58, that they want to be rid of, please contact me.

Might like to ask you about the Glen Grey if I could only find the link to PM. I've looked under all the headings, etc. Can you point that out to me?

Thanks Mike. Knew what a PM was, just didn't know it was called a conversation on this forum.

Just got permission from the ol' ball and chain to buy another hat pretty soon. I've been looking at a Fed IV and at a Campdraft. The more I look at a Fed IV, though, the less impressed I am with the hat. Anyone know what the open crown height and brim width is on a Campdraft? I would like an open crown height of 5 3/4 and a brim width of 2 3/4.

Brim is 2 7/8" & open crown close to 5 5/8", maybe 5 3/4"

Hey, TJ, I've been praising my Christmas Black FED IV on here to the point where I think everybody's tired of hearing about it. I already had two CD's and thought I might not like the Fed as much: I swear I've had it on night and day since Christmas morning. The black Heritage fur felt is a deep, deep black and is silky-soft. I wore it tonight, brim up, when we went out to eat down in the Design District, the artsy part of this town (every burgh in this country now has one). Got no less than three compliments on it (two from guys in the kitchen).

Terry, seeing your conversions and reading about your preferences, I definitely think you be happier with the CD over the Fed IV (I have both). The CD has that more western flair that seems to be closer to your style. The Fed IV is more classic Fedora, and you might get pretty frustrated with the brim width... Unless, of course, you're going for a change from your usual style.

I find it odd that Everything Australian describes the Campdraft as "a country style Akubra with an open crown for custom shaping", then lists the crown height as being only "115 mm (4.5")". Either that's a double typo, or someone doesn't know how to properly measure an open crown hat.

Yeah, I saw that too. Didn't seem right to me. Hence, the reason for my asking the crown height on the Campdraft for confirmation.

Although I seem to gravitate toward the thin and mid-ribbons I actually like the wider ribbon fedoras too. I just can't afford to buy the ones I like, especially the vintage ones off the bay. Due to my low wage warehouse job and my financially embarrassed pockets I've come to develop a philosophy, If you can't afford the hat you want, convert a hat to what you want. But even that's not the same as having the actual thing. Also, I lack the monetary resources to buy more of the tools I need to make more hats in a wider variety of styles I would like. So, I'm limited in what I can do at the moment, unless a rich uncle somewhere that I don't know about left me tons of cash in his will. :) Probably not, though. :( Anyway, I was a little concerned that the open crown height on the Fed IV, of 5 5/8 inches, may not actually be tall enough for an Indyesque look, and that the 2.5 inches brim width on the sides may be too narrow for the dimensionally cut brim that's 2 3/4 inches from front to back. For that '30s Indyesque style, I want a tall straight boxy crown that I can crease with a Center Dent to 5 inches all around, 4 3/4 at the pinch with a rake sloping to 4 1/4 inches to the back. I would definitely have to rework the bow and ribbon on it as well, but that's a fun and easy enough fix for me. From the pictures I've seen of the Fed IV here on the Lounge it doesn't look as though any are creased taller than 4.5 inches, a little short, I think, for an Indyesque look. Does anyone have pictures of themselves wearing the Fed with the Indy styling? I'd like to get an idea of what I can actually do with it.

Here's a '50s era Open Road, 5 3/4 open crown with a 2 3/4 brim. I creased it with a C-Crown, 4 3/4 at the pinch with a rake sloping to 4 inches in the back. Those are the dimensions I'm looking for in a Campdraft, except in a different color other than Silverbelly. Fawn, probably, since they don't make the dark brown anymore.

Me, wearing the hat, joined by my Son and Grandson. Yeah, I'm old!

Will the Campdraft's dimensions crease out to look like the OR pictures above?

Gotta love Laurel and Hardy! Classic! Even when they were doing Silents! Check out all the nice hats in this 1928 silent short, "Two Tars"
