Can't take credit for the table cloth. Walked in that room, and there it was. I have no idea where it came from or how it got there. I'm guessing it may have something to do with the stylish woman I married.

I was under the impression that CDs were ORs. They just lost the Stetson license and renamed them. Or did they change some design element, such as brim width, or such.

Does anybody have an Australian OR? And how would you tell?

Everyone here has been excellent at pointing me in the right direction, so I'd like to ask a rather "newbie" question: what else currently on the market is in the same vein as a Campdraft?

  • Stetson Premier Stratoliner
  • Borsalino Alessandria
Am I missing anything? I'm partial to mink/mid-brown, for what it's worth.

I inherited a vintage Open Road in silverbelly from my grandfather, which I had bashed by Baron Hats into a teardrop (I'm way too "city" to pull off the Cattleman bash it came with, for what it's worth). That hat is single handedly responsible for sending me down the rabbit hole...

Thanks all,

- m
You're right about the Stratoliner and the Alessandria, but look at the price differentials between them and the CD's. I think this is a very clear example of products selling on a name-recognition basis as opposed to a quality one. Whenever I see a Stetson or Borsalino these days I first think "Akubra" and then "Mike at Northwest Hats," who can make you pretty much anything you want starting at $179.00. As you get into this you'll eventually want to try a custom job, and, man, that first one's a revelation. I must asy that I wish I'd have known what you do when I first got into this. I'd have saved enough for a top-of-the-line custom.

Regarding deliveries, I bought the SBCD last Tuesday and see that it was received by the Australian Post the next day, then it arrived at a sorting facility in Sydney. Now it's in transit. That's it. So, my poor little hat is somewhere out in the cold, cruel world somewhere between Sydney and Miami, out amongst all those sadistic baggage handlers, terrorists, American Customs apes, etc. I just hope he makes it in one piece and somehow makes it past the thief who regularly slices my envelopes open.

Hearing that description, I think next time I'll just fly down there and pick up my hat. For what we all pay in shipping, we could all generate an order once a year, and send you down to pick up the load. You can bash all the hats to pass the time on the flight.

Count me in, David.

I just got a quote for a new RM Campdraft in mid-brown (thanks to a stellar recommendation from someone here), and the shipping cost is just under 40% of the hat price! The hat's in Santa's hands now...

Mid-brown is not a standard colour offered in a Campdraft at this time. It has been gone for a few years off the Akubra menu. I have one. I do not think it was a very popular colour offering, hence its demise. If you wanted a mid-brown you can get something very similar from RM Williams but it is not open crown.

Custom orders do not mean pick any colour, any hat. The 90 days is if it is not a stocked model/colour at EA they will have it manufactured with a 90 day turn around.

Mike, thanks again for the recommendation. I just placed an order for an AM in mid-brown, and it will arrive mid-December (just in time for the holidays!).

My gut already tells me that I'll be sending it to Colin at JJ Hat Co for a teardrop bash after arrival, but we'll see.

When I ordered my Moonstone Fed IV at the end of August Hats Direct/The Hattery shipped it the next day, but it sat in Australia for two extra days because Australia Post doesn't do business on Saturdays and/or Sundays. Lesson learned - place your order early in the week so it'll leave Australia before the weekend. :D When it arrived in Los Angeles it sat (presumably in customs) for two or three days, but when it started moving again it went through three different U.S.P.S. locations and still made it to our front porch in six hours.

I hope you like it right out of the box. I doubt there are very many of that model in the good ol' USA. I myself enjoy having something somewhat unique. Heck, maybe that is why I wear fedoras?? Oh my I think I am having a break through! It is all so much clearer now.

My first Campdraft showed up today courtesy of Colin @ JJ Hat Center (how cool is it that someone had this in stock stateside in my size!).

The sheer size of this lid is going to take some time getting used to; I just got comfortable with my modern Strat and vintage OR.

I'm seriously considering getting a bluegrass green. How versatile have you found the color to be? Through the week I'm usually wearing a navy or grey suit. Cool days on the weekend I'm usually wearing my sage Barbour Beaufort. The other option would be fawn, though I'm not as keen on it.
