Thanks everyone for the replies, I may consider buying one and having the brim trimmed back.

gtdean48 - I just saw the premier Stratoliner, it looks nice but the crown seems smaller than the vintage Strats I have seen. Do you have one of the new Premier Stratoliners? If so what do you think? How does it compare to the vintage hats. Thanks again for the information.

I just found the open crown Stetson thread, there is a lot of information there. Thanks for letting me know about these new Stratoliners. I will very likely be ordering one soon.

I have a question about stretching a hat slightly. My Silverbelly Campdraft fits a little more snug than I'd like, so I've ordered a hat jack to try to stretch it maybe .5 cm; 1 cm would be ideal. I've had, and worn, the hat for less than a year, so the sweat band is still soft and doesn't show any signs of dehydration. So here's my question: Should I treat the sweat band with a conditioner like Pecard first, or would that be unnecessary on such a new hat?

You don't need to apply anything. Just take baby steps. After achieving the desired size leave the hat jack at that size and keep the hat on it after wearing for awhile because the hat may want to shrink back.

With a fairly new hat you probably don't need it but if you have some Pecard's already it couldn't hurt. I always apply it to my vintage hats when I first receive them and before I stretch them. I even apply it to my new hats every so often just because I like the way it softens up the sweatband.

Like job said, take baby steps and don't stretch it too much. Also, leave it on the stretcher as long as you can and the stretch will set better. I also like to put the hat on my head immediately after removing it from the stretcher to let it conform to my head when it starts to shrink back, which it will do a little once removed from the stretcher.

Al, old adage is "it coudn't hurt"...I use Lexol wipes but good quality leather conditioner like Pecard is fine.
When "training" my lids, I wipe them with conditioner, let it soak in some, put the stretcher in & wear another hat, repeat....

Looking for sizing advice. I have four Campdrafts in size 59 which fit my in-between 7-3/8 & 7-1/2 head perfectly, but I am looking buy one as a gift (for my father-in-law). Trying to keep it a surprise, closet recon has found he wore both a size 6-7/8 and a size 7 cap when he left the service a few years ago and a recently purchased Charley One Horse western that is a size medium. The Charley One Horse website indicates a medium = 7 to 7-1/8. Trying to avoid have to do an overseas exchange, I'm trying to decide whether a 56 or 57 is the safer way to go?

Here are a few pics of a well worn Campdraft. This is my camping hat, and while it's a bit misshapen the felt is in perfect shape. I could easily clean and reblock it back to being a proper dress hat. But I have other hats for that purpose.

Absolutely love that hat Univibe! Looks like it's gone in the drink a few times. I'm still trying to get a hat to look this lived in.
