Akubra Boss of the Plains: How much open crown is TOO much to reduce?

So I'm thinking of getting the Akubra Boss of the Plains, which has a 6.25" open crown.
For those who've bashed tall crowns down to size, is it do-able to take 6.25" down to a 4.5" crown in a teardrop-pinchfront shape?

Or is that too much of a height reduction to be able to accomplish through creasing and shaping and make it look right?
Is there any rule of thumb on that?

Thanks for sharing any experiences and observations!

That is a lot of crown to drop down. Your issue will be having an inner dome that will stick up above the outer edges of the crease. Some folks like that & some don't. Some go for the double teardrop to use up more crown & keep the inner dome in check. I like a Montana Peak or an Arena crease on a Western with lots of crown. JMHO...

Yes, gtdean, I thought about doing the double-teardrop (a la the ol Roy Rogers hat some of us grew up with on TV...I kinda like that, but since this will be my first bash-attempt, I'm not sure I can pull it off).
Has anybody here ever tried a double-teardrop?

Cookie, I will indeed check out your thread.

Thanks! (Hopefully, some other folks will chime in on this...)

Here's a couple photos of hats I have in progress. Both had crowns over 6 inches and are now 4 1/2" in front and around 3 3/4" in back. The crease ends up over an inch deep and I just put a bit of a bump in it for headroom, I leave it kind of informal.

Thanks, BanjoMerlin! Those pics are helpful.
Do you have any 3/4 front pics, so I can see what they'd look like to another person facing the hat?

Thanks for refreshing this thread. That's a great job you did.
I eventually decided to try the Akubra Bobby instead of the Boss of the Plains. When it gets here, I'll make an attempt at re-shaping the standard crown.

I like what you did with that BOTP Dundee. Are you using it for reinactment?
It will be used for reenactments and Cowboy action shooting in the future.

Does anyone have any pics of your Akubra Boss of the plains. I'm thinking a cattlemans crease with the brim up could look real good. Just like the web pics.

Here's what I did with my Aubra Boss of the Plains.
The crown is about 4.5" in front, trailing back to about 4.25" in back, just a simple telescope with a very slight pinch (hard to see in this image). It's a very comfortable hat, and should be good for horseback riding with the stampede string I added.

Akubra Boss of the Plains

job,

Below is a picture of my Akubra Boss of the Plains in a cattleman's crease. This is a new hat bought from Everything Australian. The website advertises the crown to be over 6" but I don't think that is accurate. I didn't measure mine when I got it but I don't think it was any taller than my Campdrafts. If it was, it wasn't much. It comes with a very nice semi-pencil roll to the brim. However, on mine I steamed the pencil roll out slightly on the front of the brim. It looks great though with the pencil roll all the way around too. I just prefer the front brim down slightly to keep the sun out of my eyes.

I like the look of that one Landman. I haven't been able to find many photos of the Akubra BOTP so it's nice to see yours. Thanks!

I just acquired an Akubra BOTP from a former regular Lounger. It was in a teardrop but I took it to a Montana/Gus crease. His brim was flattened out but I took it to more of a western curl. I'll get some photos up soon. It is replacing that Cattleman that you got off me on the bay, Sam.
