Look at an Akubra Squatter in open crown. It has a fairly wide band which balances that nice tall crown; gives you more sun protection with its wider brim and gives you some color options. You can shape it to suit your own look and only idiots will think it is an Indy hat. (Which is to say that people will still do it, but far less frequently.)

Seriously, this might be what you want in a good looking and durable hat.

Eventually you just have to bite the bullet. I've always wanted an OR but could never find one in an XXL, so I'm finally going custom. Not crazy about the Cattleman's crease, though. Too LBJ.

All of that said, I walked up to a check out counter this last weekend in my 1940s silverbelly Open Road and got "I thought Indiana Jones was walking up in here!".

Wear what you want. It won't matter.
Last Mardi Gras weekend, I was crossing from my car to my apartment front door, wearing my dark green-with-brown-leather-collar London Fog hunting jacket * and a medium-brown '30s Borsalino. A couple of my neighbors were standing nearby. I heard one say, "Man looks like he in a movie."

* Don't know what to call it, since LF doesn't make it any more. It looks sort of like a waxed cotton Barbour jacket, and a bit like an L.L. Bean barn or chore coat -- but I bought it at a local department store in 1990.

I am still going to purchase a nice hat but I may have found a solution for a good work/hunting hat. I picked up a Stetson Downs hat in Moss yesterday for cheap on ebay. Supposedly from the 60s but I have my doubts. I will post pics on a new thread when I get it.

Ryan some people dont like Akubras as much as others. Moontheloon is one of them.

yes you do look good in the Federation. My question is do you want to keep with a fedora? Do you like the sun coverage? Another good fedora style with a wider brim is the Squatter. Here is mine in carbon grey.

in fact I think you can click on the picture and be taken to my photobucket page. have a look, I have lots of Akubras, and if you have any question feel free to ask.

That one looks pretty nice as well. The more I look at the different styles the more I want to have one of each!

Since im a hat newb can you explain? Im not to the point of spending loads of money on a hat yet. Im mostly interested in the 150ish price range.
I haven't bit the bullet yet on a custom hat, but as I understand it, $150 is about where they start. So going custom is only a small step up from the Akubra range.

There's also vintage, the real deal, and you can find some good deals and a lot of them will still be better hats than you can buy new anywhere in the world today. But depending on your hat size and luck, finding one can be a crapshoot.

Great suggestion and nice hat. I wish I had suggested the Squatter. ;-)
