But how are they different from the normal Campdraft? They are certainly more expensive.

This is a hat with the dimensions of a CampDraft made for a company which is in honor of an Aussie outdoor enthusiast. It is styled more like an LBJ Open Road than a fedora. Less rear flanging. It has a nice brown color which is not normally available for CDs from other vendors. Not as great as the BlueGrass Green, but better than the Silverbelly in my opinion. About as nice as the MoonStone.

http://www.rmwilliams.com.au/akubra--rm--hat/HA179.html

(Be advised that the price is initially in Aussie dollars, so do not panic until you have changed the currency to yours)

It is actually from Spectrum Online, which we believe is just another name for Hats By the Hundred.

The hat quality is quite good, but they sent me the wrong size (correctly marked, but it was a size 60 rather than the size 58 ordered and marked.) I wound up paying a bit of cash to return their error. So beware of ordering from distant places. Get them to check carefully before shipping. This is why I prefer to deal with Sam at Everything Australian. He checked everything on my orders and confirmed it all to me in writing before shipping. Hats Direct and RM Williams both have failed to do this for my orders.

It may be custom hats for me in the near future. I have run out of CampDrafts and am not sure whether I want any fed IVs.

The Akubra RM has the same dimensions, crown and brim, uncreased, as the Campdraft, but the RM is sold pre-creased and the Campdraft is sold open-crown.
The RM comes in a "mid-brown" color that the Campdraft does not.
The RM has a flatter brim than the Campdraft.
My RM weighs 4.8 ounces, as compared to my Campdrafts which weigh 5.3 and 5.7 ounces, and the RM is slightly thinner and rather more stiff.

I am going to give the Cattleman another look after seeing your advice. Perhaps it's not as Western as I initially thought.

I certainly wouldn't consider it a city hat, what with its 3.25" wide brim, thin leather band, and vent-holes. but I have no qualms about wearing it casually hereabouts in the suburbs where I dwell, but then, I'm retired and wear and do most whatever I please.

I am an attorney but am rarely in court and work in a casual dress law firm, so I have no qualms about dressing casually just like I would on the weekend.

Akubra Cattleman has a 83 mm brim = 3 1/4" , but The Akubra Bushman is the same , but I haven't seen them sold on the Australian Sites , only USA . David Morgan is the Distributor , but several places sell them , more colors are offered in The Cattleman , where only two are in The Bushman , Tan , and Moonstone . Mine is Tan , more of a brown , though . I played with creases , but finally put a Peak Crown in , but you can always change the crease of the crown , or change the roll of the brim , making it whatever suits you . Not difficult at all .

Glad u got that straight w them. Don't understand how/why u gotta pay for their screwup.

Well, it is not exactly straight with them, but it is the best that could be salvaged after the fact. They "generously" refunded a portion of my initial shipping. Sadly, the return shipping and replacement shipping are on me. Not the best customer relations choice...

On the other hand, I really do want the hat all the more for having seen one in person. Just a pity that it was so large and they did not check this before sending it out across the world.

Guess you did the best you could. Great color though.

Thanks for the advice. I was eyeing a Campdraft, and since I already got the Fed IV, I figured I would get a much more casual hat as an everyday beater. I also really like the outback style and want to satisfy my craving for an outback hat.
My favorite on that list, and one of my all time favorites, is the Banjo Patterson. If you don't like big hats like the Cattleman, you probably will like the Campdraft even more. It's taller. I love my Banjo.

Thank you all again for your advice. I haven't seen anyone advocate for the Traveller, so although I like the idea of a travel hat since I do travel quite a bit, I think I will drop that off my list for now.

I think I will end up getting either a Lawson or a Banjo Paterson for the outback style, but I may wait on those as discussed below. I really like the rugged look, so I am leaning toward Lawson at the moment, although more people seem to advocate for the Banjo. For those who advocate for the Banjo, what about the Banjo makes you prefer it (color, brim size, the band, etc.)? For me, I do like the leather band of the Lawson with the chocolate color. I am also still considering the Cattlemen as Doctor Strange seems to think that might be a better fit for my stocky frame. In addition, I really love the sand color, and the unlined hat with the grommets might be better for hot Houston summers (I could potentially wait to buy the Banjo or Lawson once the weather cools off later in the year).

I also had not been previously considering a Campdraft, but it seems there are a lot of CD fans on here, so now I am thinking of maybe getting a Campdraft in Bluegrass Green as they are not too pricy and I could save on shipping from Australia by getting a second hat. I was previously going to get a straw hat as my second hat but it seems like the consensus is that the fur felts are not too bad in the summer.

I do have one question about the Campdraft. It has such fervent followers that I have to ask, what is it about the Campdraft that elicits such strong reactions? It looks like a fairly versatile classy, and beautiful entry, but nothing really jumps off the page (or computer screen) about it.

I never recommended the Cattleman, I recommended the Stockman. I said that around here, the Cattleman reads as a cowboy hat... though guys from other parts of the country (where big hats are common) disagree.

The Campdraft is beloved because it's similar to the mega-classic Stetson Open Road, and comes open crown, so it can be bashed as fedora-like or country-like as you prefer.

A. It's got very little to no taper, which gives it the classic, old school fedora look
B. It's open crown, so we can futz with it and get it exactly how we want. It's essentially made to older, 50s-style Stetson Open Road specs, which are also coveted around here. It has a nearly 6" open crown, which is very desirable, and more than you can get out of most modern hats.
C. Akubra price vs. quality ratio is unbeatable

I misunderstood. Since I am from Houston where big hats are common, I assumed you meant it was recommended for a place like Houston. I am trying to find more pictures of a Stockman, but I can't seem to find much. It also has a 3 month wait for Sand, and I don't love the fawn color in most of the pictures even though I like other fawns Akubra makes. Maybe it's just the lighting?
