Watch your PBS stations for the upcoming episode of American Experience. The story of Aimee Semple McPherson is slated - an important and interesting Golden Era figure if ever there was one. Evangelist, showman, church founder, flamboyant and controversial. Should be a good watch:

Sister Aimee: A profile of Sister Aimee Semple McPherson (1890-1944), a popular Pentecostal evangelist during the 1920s and '30s. Included: comments from biographer Matthew Avery Sutton (“Aimee Semple McPherson and the Resurrection of Christian America”).

Yes, and the ingredients in the mixture were ---- "mystery, underworld characters, spooks, kidnapers, sex, the ocean, hot desert sands, an escape, and a thrilling finale...... a kind of compendium of the times'.----
Way to go Sister Aimee!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've written her in as the main character in a radio noir drama script I'm currently finishing. I didn't have to alter reality much...:eusa_doh:

Sister Aimee was every bit the Joel Osteen or Joyce Meyer of her generation. A pioneer televangelist (radio-evangelist?), she was one of the first evangelists to use radio to spread the Gospel. Most historians agree hers was the first megachurch, and she founded The Foursquare Church, one of the larger Pentecostal denominations.

I didn't know too much about her and I enjoyed the documentary. I didn't realize how much she was the inspiration for the character Sister Sharon Falconer in Sinclair Lewis's masterwork "Elmer Gantry". (A book I simply can't recommend enough: as good as the 1960 film adaptation with Burt Lancaster and Jean Simmons is, it only covers about one-third of the novel.)

And she was the model for Mrs. Melrose Ape in Evelyn Waugh's book, _Vile Bodies_. Stockard Chaning played her is Stephen Frye's adaptation of the book, _Bright Young Things_.

"Ain't no flies on the Lamb of God. He's smarter than a whip."

Haversack.

Thanks, I'll have to be on the lookout for that film. Coincidentally, I just watched "Wilde" starring Fry last week, and enjoyed it.

(Oscar Wilde and Aimee Semple McPherson in the same thread? Talk about an odd couple!)

Sounds like a fun Saturday night.

Meanwhile,

In 2005, the Four Square Church bought and remodeled the castle which now could be yours for $1,495,000.

That is the asking price for the meticulously refurbished home, casually referred to by locals as "Aimee's Castle."

$1.5 mil. Probably haunted by who-knows-what.

Sister Aimee was the subject of a seminar class in grad school, and she's also the basis for a character in my current noir PI radio drama. The odd thing is that I really didn't have to modify her actions or behavior very much at all to fit her into the script.
