Does this style of jacket look out of place as you get even older (say 70’s’)?

I guess the thought is a bit in my head:rolleyes:

I personally don't think it's age related, it depends on the person.
I have seen people in their 20s look like crap in a MC/D pocket leather jacket, i have seen people in their 70s look amazing in the same style of jacket.
It's about making the jacket yours and looking natural in it, not about age.
Some people look like they are cosplaying, some look like it is their natural style, if you can own it you can wear anything.

Absolutely. When I got my first cross zip I was a bit self conscious wearing it out and in those early days several people asked me: “where’s the Harley?” After a bit of time went by the jacket became just another jacket to me and nobody has asked me that question in a long time.

I had an interesting conversation with a friend the other day.

We were discussing our stage in life (mid fifties) and all that goes with it. Eventually the topic of personal style came up. We joked a lot about styles from the 80’s etc., and what may look good on some folks, doesn’t always look good on others.

At this point, I mentioned that I was considering another leather jacket purchase and showed her this ….

The response I got was “that’s not very age appropriate”. It was said tongue in cheek, but still, it got me to thinking and it gave me pause …

Am I over the hill for such a jacket? I mean I don’t ride. What say the collective brain power here.

And we flamed or rather burnt away as you asked for... the concept of being "age appropriate". :)

If I can wear this outfit to a restaurant... you surely can wear a crosszip anywhere you wish. Just as people said, don't let it wear you, get something you like and you will be comfortable in it, hence you will look good!

You’ll pretty much only find the wear what you want crowd here.

Exactly as it should be :D

For my part, also in the mid fifties, I found my style and have always been a fan of cross-zipped leather jackets. For me, the question is not whether I can wear a certain jacket style or not, but rather, should I get another jacket that will outlive me... :(

Of course you should! All my good jackets will outlive me, hopefully they will go to someone who will appreciate them after I pass on.

It's not age-appropriate... Might as well have told you to start killing yourself. Slowly.

Wear what you want to wear!

As others have noted; Don't let the jacket wear you. Absolutely make sure it's the right size. Past certain age, you shouldn't wear anything over-sized if you don't want to appear even older. Old people wear everything the wrong size. It's synonymous with being old. Avoid this.
Don't make the jacket the part of your identity. You don't need it & it will backfire. You gotta feel just as cool without it.

Lastly, the person who cares the most is you. If you don't care, the world cares even less. Wear it and have fun.

^^^ @Monitor, That guy is rockin his jacket, but, isn't it considered oversized? Looking at the shoulders, arms, and waist, most on this forum would say it is 1 or 2 sizes too big.

I also thought it looked a bit big, but as @Monitor said, "If you don't care, the world cares even less." and that guy really looks like he doesn't care, so i don't care.

Just look at our very own TMitchell. He looks very "age appropriate" in his "young guy only" cross zips. I think he looks a little out of place when he wears an "age appropriate" half belt. I couldn't even picture him wearing an A-2. lol. Motorcycle jackets just look "right" on him.

All the older gents on this forum really wear their cross zips quite well. I don't think any of them look out of place at all.

That's Touko Valio Laaksonen aka Tom of Finland. The sizing - Or rather, the exaggeration - is deliberate in this particular case. Regardless, the jacket doesn't hang on him. Shoulders are straight, length is perfect... As @Carlos840 noted, he's rockin' it.

Saw a great film about him a couple of years ago... fascinating. Loved the scene where he's in a swimming pool in L.A. and the cops bust in... He's expecting them all to be arrested but the cops just ask if they'd seen a perp nearby then leave. That's not what would've happened in Finland and his expression was... priceless. Good movie.

Actually... For any motorcycle jacket, the main thing is to choose the right size. And age and gender and other parameters are secondary :)
