A Bay Rum Virgin

Thanks to this thread i have just bought my first ever bottle of Clubman Virgin Island Bay Rum. To be honest i was surprised to even find it here in Belfast but i did and i'm thrilled.

Can't wait to shave and try some out properly.

Why do you ask?
Bay Rum?

The past few months, I've been doing a local search for bay rum to no avail. I was wondering what the best source, and brand for that matter, of the stuff would be. I've found it online but am hesitant to order for fear of it being of suspect quality and don't want the hassle of a return.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

Randy,
Have you used bay rum before?

Different brands have different ingredients and therefore different aromas. The top notes can vary from cloves to ginger to brown sugar, at least in my experience. That being said, I don't believe that there is one "holy grail" bay rum. If you have used one and liked it, you'll probably like other variations as well.

I personally have versions from C.O. Bigelow, Pinaud, Ogallala, and Dominica. I also have a homebrew version that I mixed with witch hazel and aloe that I use as an after shave splash. I guess you could call me a collector...

Madness may lie this way, but at least I'll smell good :D

It's been some time, but I have used bay rum in the past. I can't remember which brand it was, though.

Make sure you use witch hazel before the CLubman Bay Rum. Otherwise your face will burn like the fires of Hell...

I always use a splash [or three] of witch hazel after a shave to begin with, so that'd be no problem.

The witch saves your from Hell... lol

Barclay Crocker has a Bay Rum Sampler that lets you try 14 different Bay Rums.
Look for the Bay Rum Shop on their site. http://barclaycrocker.com

After shave

Don't think me crass, but I swear by old spice. Most times I clip my beard anyhow, But youz guyz, know where to get the stuff, the stuff in the bottle. You know, the guy in G.q. wrote an article about the stuff, like they use in the Barber shops or something? Reminds me of old spice....

The Pinaud's Clubman aftershave is what I associate with the barbershop smell. I like their bay rum too, and he cheapskate in me likes the fact that both products are $7ish at my local Walgreens.

By the way, my wife has a very limited sense of smell, due to some surgeries she has had done over the years trying to beat asthma and sinus infections, so she wouldn't know the difference, I just like the smell for myself.

Although I love Old Spice and English Leather the best(grew up with dad wearing those scents),I always demure to whatever my current girlfriend prefers. These have been: Curve(original),Polo Safari,Calvin Klein Obession(or is it Opium?)and Canoe. All very distinct and classy men`s colognes.

Thank god for women! *Ew-Rawh! - Al Pacino voice -* :p

My dad had a bottle of that St. John's bay rum in his bathroom the whole time I was growing up. I remember the wrapping vividly. I don't recall that he ever wore it, but by golly the bottle was there.

Ogallala is my favorite, and my wife's too. I believe it has witch hazel in it, does not burn as much as an alcohol based after shave. Also has a strong clove note in it, which I really like.
