Aero Vicenza vs CXL FQHH vs CXL Steerhide = 1st world problems

I’ve stopped asking for samples b/c I don’t find them all that informative anymore. Can’t recall the last time a sample and the finished jacket had anything in common. For me it’s all about the batch and I just ask specific questions as to the batch qualities. Weight, grain and a pic usually does it.

Can you elaborate your experience between sample and actual jacket?

I have only 1 schott jacket. Vintage/tumbled waxy cowhide.

Despite different tannery with Aero, the “grain type” is the same/expected as steerhide sample from aero. Here’s some pic

Answer time:

A= steerhide
B= vicenza
C= fqhh

In my opinion:

Steer grain is bolder compared to horse. As an overall jacket, I think it need to be seen in person as the sample is just a small piece.

Vicenza feels like dead leather to me. It’s thinner, more flexible from the start. Feels a bit like man made leather. Despite it’s higher price (which supposed to be premium), I don’t like it. Luckily I will be able to see some in person during Aero open day [emoji1308]and reserve my judgement.

Maybe because of my hot and humid weather, in terms of pliability , it feels the same between fqhh vs steerhide. I think the fqhh a bit more pliable. But maybe because the sample is thinner.

So I'm just a little curious Fortehus- how many Aero Vicenza jackets do you or have you owned? And how many Aero FQHH or Steerhide jackets do you or have you owned? Just want to know what kind of first hand experience you're basing your opinions on- with regards to Vicenza, FQHH, and steerhide.

Just my experience but I have flirted with samples on and off over 30 years and it has never been a reliable way to pick a hide.
This has been my experience as well over the last few years. Hell, I have a sample of Vanson Comp. weight leather that would lead one to believe it was a soft mdweight hide with no break in required!
I also agree that samples can be nice for color as long as one remembers that it varies from batch to batch.

I only have 1 (for start), schott 673.

The experience is based on the sample sent by Aero. I know as people mentioned here that sample is not a good measurement of actual how it looks like for now.

I will observe more when I visit aero next week. Not much good leather in Singapore to judge.

At least from the samples given it set some baseline because the leather attributes feels pretty in the same ballpark from one type to another.

As you may have guessed. A claim with virtually no justification.

Seems as if the earliest batches of the Vicenza had the most color variation, but who knows. Carrie may know from handling so many.

Check out the first few pages of the Thurston Vicenza thread. Almost an entirely different leather. Vicenza can be rather color flat, but so can Shinki. Probably all dependent on the batch. It sure wears nicely though!

I read that more as an opinion, rather than a claim.

Couple of quick pictures for reference. Black shinki RMC J100 and Aero J100 in dark seal Vicenza.I really like both. Would love to see dark brown shinki in person to compare against these two.

Until you get a chance in person, here you go...brown shinki (Himel Kensington) on right, dark seal Vicenza (early batch Aero Dustbowl) on left.

And here are two dark seal Vicenzas (and the Shinki.) The Vicenza on the far left is very different in color and grain than the earlier Vicenza in the middle. It's been my experience that horsehide varies greatly from batch to batch. And that's why I would never render an opinion condemning a leather based on a couple of small samples. That's just me. I believe there's just no shortcut for going through the experience of owning a jacket or two.

Does it matter? Either way it was not helpful. On a forum like this a claim and an opinion are generally the same thing. Not sure an analysis of forum epistemology is useful but I'm open to anything. :D

On the subject of Vicenza hide - does anyone have a hard worn, older example they could show us? Technovox yours look beautiful.

Wow. Thanks for the pics. I’ve grown so fond of Shinki and that dark brown is lovely.

I was giving him the benefit of the doubt but I hear where you are coming from as well.

My Vicenza is < a year old but I love it. It’s only getting better.

I am sorry if it’s not clear that I already state that it’s an opinion. If this forum cannot accept opinion. Then this site should just be a reference site who professionally deal with such thing

Fortehus you and anyone are welcome to have an opinion. It's just useful to know if the opinion is based on actual experience of wearing or owning jackets. One of the problems with sites like this is people opine about stuff they have no experience of. This can make it hard to find quality reference material when you are making a decision.

On a separate note, I am looking at my Vincenza half-belt in the winter sun - it's a gorgeous, deep brown with a range of grain and tones and luster. Hard to understand anyone disliking this hide. Must get a good photo.

Fortehus,
Your opinions here are as welcome as anyone else’s. I think what some of the guys were pointing out is that you have not yet owned a jacket in any of the three hides which you were writing about.
Don’t let this get you down, if you are like the rest of us you will soon jackets in these three hides plus a few others to go with them.

I have the same problem to choose so I request a sample from Aero

Here are 3 sample from different hides. So I beleive blind test like this should help to decide (or make it worse [emoji28])

Which one you guys love the most from the picture and guess what leather is A, B or C ? I will give the answer few days later :)

By my reckoning:
A - Vicenza HH
B - Goat

Samples are handy to see how the leather scuffs and abrades, but also how a particular batch looks at the moment.
C - CXL HH

The answer is above. A= Steer B = Vicenza C = FQHH
