These both look great. Nice element of variation in each. The second looks not unlike a Bootlegger, though with several subtle differences.

Yes, I was experimenting a bit with different moto/aviator combos - the blue one was first and that had button cuffs, no snaps on the lapels and a plain back with a kidney panel - the black one has zip sleeves, snaps on both sets of lapels, epaulettes and a single Western yoke on the back, with no kidney panel - I definitely prefer the single yoke option without the kidney panel now I have them to compare. The badalassi is also much nicer than the Vicenza (which is still a v nice leather, but not a patch on the badalassi imo). I have a goatskin one in rust suede in the pipeline….unfortunately it looks like it will arrive just as the weather turns wet and cold, so might not see much action till the spring. That one will have a dark brown mouton collar, no epaulettes, snaps on both sets of lapels and the single Western yoke with the plain back, but button cuffs….I have attached a couple of shots of the other two for comparison of the back panels - I prefer these simpler backs to the Hooch Hauler and I think the half belt (a la the Bootlegger)

on this short jacket would look a bit odd on me, hence the trialling of these different options. I also opted for standard zip pulls on all the pockets rather than those with chains, as I prefer to not have these dangling off the front.

This is a thread I've long wanted to join. Always liked the simple dpocket design on this. Got lucky with this one. Wiped down and some conditioner getting sun. Previous owner did most of the work but it's 80% broken in and obvious good color development so far. Cxl is manageable. Feels slightly thinner than my brown sheene. I thought the natural was thicker but glad it wasnt tbh.

I'll put some fit pics in other thread later. A tad bit big but that's me being super picky and not my usual tshirt only fit.

I had to size down in J-106. My first jacket was a size 42 but it was really like a 46 or something. Just stupidly too big and I was between 40 to 42 at the time. Got a size 40 for the second one and it was much, much smaller and actually perfect so I'd say size down.


Just seeing these and I want to note that the answer to this is dramatically different if you’re talking about the standard J-106 pattern or an Aero/Thurston Ridley.

The latter is cut like a slim board racer. You should not size down.

I think the Aero Slimfit MC is not quite as extreme as the Boardracer and it has more taper, putting it closer to the Hooch Hauler imo - the shoulders on the BR are definitely a lot narrower than on the Slimfit MC (I have two of both of these models and the differences are consistent) - the BR is much more “tubular” through the body than these and the sleeves are also notably tighter. The V is definitely not as marked as on the Cafe Racer though.

That could well be the case but the initial question was about whether one should downsize on the Ridley (proprietary Thurston pattern), which does fit like a Board Racer. Downsizing it from one’s usual chest measure would not be wise. (Whereas with the 50s type Aero DRs, one can downsize a fair bit.)

Agreed - I would certainly not recommend downsizing in this pattern.

100% agree. It's easy to treat this similar to a Regular Highwayman verses a Premier Fit Highwayman. The numeric size in these cases does matter quite a bit. I am a 40 in a standard Highwayman, and a 44 or even 46 in a Premier fit HWM.

agreed. The natural cxl one I bought is a 44. Although slightly big, I don't think I could have fit into a 42. However, if it would have been a Vicenza or Badalassi, I probably could have gotten away with a 42.

In both cases, that is the higher end of sizes for me as I tend to be a solid 40 in most things now unless the vintage stuff and/or Japanese models. But we all know, you need to check the numbers on the jackets, especially Aero as they do vary a lot.

@Salmosalar Nice rust brown on the leather. The button cuffs are also very nice touch. This jacket is customized from top down. Aero should offer this as a regular design. I bet you can get a lot of wears out of this one.

Yes, hardware is brass and the snaps are antique. But they looks black.
I like them! Been thinking of doing something similar. Was thinking of doing nickel snaps with brass zips, Indian Ranger vibe, but I really like the look of yours.
