Aero modified redskin D-1 (pic heavy)

It's interesting, I thought this would be the case and was why I bought my B6 first - but in reality, I find the pockets pretty useless. They're angled and positioned too awkwardly to comfortably use as handwarmers, and the fact they're not zipped means you can't really put stuff in them (although they're pretty deep). Still, doesn't detract from the jacket overall whatsoever!

You'll find the standard D-1 pockets even more useless as handwarmers to be honest, not that I'm trying to put you off your recent purchase. You kind of have to strike a strange pose when you use them but they're grand for gloves. You can't salute with your hands in your pockets anyway!

It occurred to me once that the reason pockets on military jackets were designed specifically to discourage people using them as handwarmers. They’re meant for holding things. I noticed how deep the pocket bags are and so I’m not worried about stuff falling out.

Thanks, RX. I'll get some pics when I can get some decent daylight - it's dark here before 4pm at the moment, so it'll be the weekend. We're anticipating a cold blast over the next couple of days, so it'll be getting a proper road test sooner rather than later.

Lovely jacket Sloan....you can't beat a 'Redskin' & the D-1 is such a practical jacket, certainly my 'Go to' shearling

I've said it before and I'll probably say it again .... of all the shearlings the D-1 is the most practical for the UK climate ( especially with a little room for a jumper or a scarf underneath )

As the cold wind and possible snow, the sheepskins come into their own. I wear my B3 and ANJ fairly often down in the south. I just leave them undone if getting too warm but then I only bought them to wear with a T shirt.

THAT... is a beautiful jacket. It is the one I would get if got a sheepskin jacket.

And to think, it's labelled a "mechanic's jacket"! Can you imagine getting one of these all ripped and oily and greasy!? It would be kinda like wearing an Armani tuxedo to wash hogs.

If you were given it as part of your working clothes would the $$$ value matter? It is only the cost of these that in 50 years time there will be a glut of worn but clean jackets. Bike jackets are about the only thing that still serve their original purpose, who wants to roll around in the mud as you say in an £600+ jacket.
Sort of off topic but where I work in the railway industry we were once given some Snap On tools to do our jobs. A few, and it was not just one or two, decided to take their issued tools home and replace them with cheaper, inferior stuff they used at home. If your boss said "here's a nice well made sheepskin to do your outside winter job" would you seriously leave it behind for something you got from a shopping mall that was not quite as warm?

It did occur to me as a I left Aero on Monday that a B-6 was inevitable now...

Ahh yes a good decision. But try to imagine it with the nicer looking adjustable side straps as on the ANJ4 rather than those ugly waist zips. Not that they are not practical, just ugly Well, thats my opinion anyway.

Hard to believe that you let your ANJ-4 go! Wow.
But then again, a B-6 is so much more practical for the UK climate - and I have just had my ELC RW B-6 on this morning and it's -4C and it scoffed at the cold northerly breeze and the collar was up and secured with the leather strap, and it's so snug ... so yours will do the same for you with the prevailing winds and a well-fitting C-3 beneath will extend the usage towards more what you had with your ANJ-4 too ... a very fine choice! And simply there's no denying the stylishness of the redskin jackets.
Wear it happily and in good health!

I would love to get a B-6 or a D-1, but I just can't see me getting much wear out of one here coz the weather turns so drastically.
On Wednesday I walked the dog in my B-3 and it was snowing (dog loves snow), yet today was T-shirt and A-2 weather.

Moving on my ELC BOB Irvin type due to lack of appropriate weather over here...needs to be colder!!!! My D-1 will cope generally & as 'Stand By' notes...a nice well fitting C-3 underneath (got one planned) will extend the usage if required

@bn1966, you're in Sheffield IIRC. Great city, loved going out drinking in Sheffield when I was there, but yeah, your winters are cold and long! You're gonna need that shearling waiting for the tram home after a night on the town!
I never noticed it when I was a kid, but I'm sure rapid temperature swings are a recent thing. I'm bracing for snow.

No strong feelings on the matter, though I'd probably go zips as they helped make the B6 that bit different from everything else.
