PAWG, as I recall you have at least a couple of very nice Aero jackets lined both in tartan and cotton drill. Question: if you lived in Sydney Australia which "enjoys a sunny, Mediterranean-style climate all year round with more than 340 sunny days per year, and summers are warm to hot and winters are mild," would you choose tartan or cotton drill? ;) Trying to put you on the spot ... :D

Well done... just returned from an hour of tense coaching and now this! I would say that the tartans are pretty light weight so I wouldn't be dissuaded from wearing them in a warm climate as I don't believe you would sense a major difference.

I'd only worry about the durability issue on a longer jacket, since you'd be sitting on the lining everytime you sit down.

Well I was hoping for a definitive response and maybe even a full scale jackets war, Tartan vs. Cotton Drill; everyone has been far too cordial with their responses. lol PAWG looking at your pictures, I think the olive cotton drill lining your BTR is fantastic looking, definitely not boring. I have to say that the tartan lining your Sheene also looks equally nice. But just wait until the moths start munching away on that tartan lining ... lol I think nothing could be finer than a Sheene made from Russet Vicenza Horsehide lined throughout with Olive Cotton Drill. No waffling from me, no siree ... :D Levity aside, there have been many opinions here likely resulting in confusion rather trhan resolution for the originator of this thread. [huh]

Indeed no Fanch! This has been extremely informative.
It's decided.
I'll order the jacket in Minto Check & ask for a cotton Drill liner to be made at the same time. This will be stored until the moths gorge themselves on the jacket, which all but appears to be an eventuality!!!
That way I'm covered both ways!!!

I am a fan of the olive in the BTR, especially matching it to OD green stitching. And now I'll have trouble falling asleep worrying about moths. Looks like I'll be sleeping with my tartans for a while.

Edit: Perhaps I should take the Minto out of the Sheene and swap it with the Olive in the BTR??

Sounds like you've got it figured out. The Minto's going to look terrific.

Replaced alpaca with Ancient MacKenzie tartan. Not as bulky, not as warm but warm enough, no itching anymore.
Wore it heavily this winter = can report on wear & tear soon.

I replaced the alpaca lining in my Aero LHB with a wool herringbone. I had Shaul at US Authentics do it as I didn't want to pay shipping both ways to Scotland. The alpaca was just too prickly for me. I find I wear the jacket a lot more now and I haven't noticed it being any less warm

I've got jackets with twill and jackets with plaid. I've not preference between THOSE two. I recently got my first jacket lined with Herringbone Tweed, now this stuff I LOVE. It's thin, but surprisingly warm and really looks distinctive. It gets my vote.

Just to chuck some wood on the fire, how about this blanket in my Teamster.

Really nice. That's an excellent lining for a longer jacket like that that you'd be intending to wear in colder weather, with perhaps a sweter underneath. I tend to be wary of aa heavy lining in a snug-fittung, pre-war type halfbelt, for the simple reason that I would then find it only had a very narrow window in the year during which it could be worn - too much for warmer weather, and not enough (there being no sweater room, and it being a bit short for a lot of my Winter knits) for Winter.... So it might depend a lot on which model the OP is going for (looking back, the OP doesn't specify..... have I missed it in the thread?). Beautiful lining, though, and looks great in your Teamster.

Great looking Teamster. Mine has a moleskin lining. Not the pizzazz of a tartan but effective nonetheless.
