Advice for my son

My son H is ten and has worn a trilby or a fedora on a daily basis for years, he is now looking to further his collection of hats, any suggestions on a new style to buy him for Christmas.

Depends on what he wears (and what size).
You might want to have a look at Johnnyphi's website.
Has some great deals in smaller sizes which may work. Just remember a size 7 in the UK is a size 7 1/8 in the US, and that size up thing applies across all sizes.

I'd avoid buying anything of any serious value, given that he is in all likelihood still growing.... but you shouldn't have much trouble finding some great stuff on eBay. Maybe a top hat or opera hat, if he goes near formal wear? A homberg might be a nice option too. Actually, if he's not owned a hat before that has a stiff brim that needs a bit of looking after (rather than springing back into shape, with or without the help of a kettle, like a fedora), a Homberg might be a good place to start. He'll probably find more use for it too, at his age. Plus as they seem to be less in demand, you can find some simply stunning bargains on them, at a tiny fraction of the cost of an equivalent quality fedora.

I would check out e-bay for that kind of head size. Look up Akubra. Tourists buy them, never wear them and sell them on e-bay for around $20-$50. Good luck.

My recommendation is to buy him a hat that is fun, somehow, rather than a serious adult hat. There is plenty of time for him to go for a Humphrey Bogart style or something like that. I think he ought to focus on something that could be seen as a kid hat--say if a wide-brim Akubra came in kid size, or a perhaps a Western hat. To go with a serious hat would be like sending him to school in a suit (apologies if you do that in the U.K.). It might look good to adults, but he might be mocked by the kids.

What about a boater for summer? And I like the suggestions a Panama but also, of not investing too much money since he'll be outgrowing them soon enough.

Great small vintage hats can be had for so little money that it doesn't make sense to buy a more expensive 'cheap kids hat'. I'd get his hat a size or two bigger and pad the sweatband til it eventually fits. He will get more use out of the hat that way.

Thank you everyone for your replies, I actually wrote a long reply last night and then for some unknown reason pressed refresh and lost it.

He is a very eccentric young man who wears suits at weekends, and a shirt and tie for casual, he doesn't go to school (Elective home education) so is able to indulge his taste in clothes all the time.

He currently owns:

• A Black Felt Trilby
• A Forest Green Felt Trilby
• A Cream Felt Trilby
• A Modern Pin-strip cotton trilby (For wet days)
• A Brown Fedora (Indiana Jones Colour)
• A Traditional Flat cap
• A Waxed cotton flat cap (for really wet days)
• A 1940's green school boy cap

I will check out all the suggestions with him today.

Hi likes them all, as I thought he might.

However, having google imaged them all he desperately wants Homberg as his hero Winston wore one, so I think that will be his next hat.

I actually have my grandads old folding opera hat, that is fairly small, so I may have to see if that fits him for special occasions.

This is great advice. You can get a VERY nice vintage had in his size (or a size or two larger) for less than you would pay for a new cheap kids hat.
I see some good candidates on ebay right now...
