As to where they purchased these campaign covers I'm not certain. Though I've seen them for sale on the web, and a friend purchased one in the town of Fort Davis from a local hat maker (trouble is I think the business is for sale...my how I dream about that). The hat that you are looking for is the 1880s campaign hat, which is tan (the color I was told comes from the use of nutra in the blend).

Sounds like you'll have to visit sometime. A lot has changed. They've restored a large part of the hospital, the officers row has some completed houses (the commanders house has artifacts from the family of Commander Grierson), the barracks are stocked as they were in the 1880s, and we have a brand new museum that only opened last year! My wife is a seasonal park ranger at the Fort, and I have the pleasure of it being practically in my backyard.

Took a hike today to Lake James. After all the rain we've been having, the water level is way up from normal. I also got a chance to wear my new hat today.

Sometimes, the action one gets is very low key indeed. This morning I got a brief chance to get away from behind my desk. I know I can't keep up with the fantastic shooting irons some members have shown here (e.g. Renault's Winchester...!!!!) but nothing beats a bit of light air rifle practice before lunch...

Went on a brilliant (but wet) day trip to Dartmoor last weekend, but I'm afraid my SD card has corrupted so the photos are gone. I have some photos from a previous trip instead. Wonderfully misty pics near Burrator Resevoir.

I think Heathfox will be interested to see I share his interest in woollen outdoors gear. I'm wearing a Swedish Army coat and trousers, dated to the 50s. Also William Lennon boots, a British Army wool shirt, and some German canvas gaiters. Since this trip I switched to full length wool puttees for greater comfort.

I'm a great fan of the Swedish coat and trousers. I had imagined it would look horribly German when I ordered it, but it actualyl has a tweedy appearance, and vaguely resembles a Norfolk suit from the 30s. The trousers have wide legs, but taper to a cuff, and they could easily be modified into breeches or plus fours. The fabric is the same heavy serge used in greatcoats, and it wicks water tremendously well, any dampness dries out in minutes. It takes a significant amount of rain for it to soak through.

Well there wasn't much action, but the oldest son and I went up to the ranch yesterday where I was practically raised. My old childhood compadre still ranches a little as his health permits. We went up for a visit and to talk old buffalo rifles and such. Loading them and different galena pills to feed em! His wife snapped this photo of "Los tres malos" before our departure!

What caliber is that 1895 in? When I was shooting Cowboy Action, I badly wanted one in .30-40 Krag (as a few of Roosevelt's officers in the 1st USV Cav carried them), but you couldn't use one in matches because technically it was a box magazine.
Not long ago, my Dad gave me his Sharp's in .45-70. Still haven't found a range long enough to test it out...

Not long ago, my Dad gave me his Sharp's in .45-70. Still haven't found a range long enough to test it out...

P51, that particular rifle is a .35 WCF. Kinda a baby .405. I have a nice 30 US Army SRC in route to me from Montana. Pics next week in Show Your Gun thread upon arrival.

Those air guns can be a lot of fun. I have two, both Feinwerkbau's, one a M300 match rifle, the other a 124 sporter. I have had the sporter a little over 40 years now.

The snow is about 10" deep, the temperature is around 24 degrees, and the wind is blowing about 16 mph. It's too damn cold out. Just going out to feed the animals and gather the eggs is an "adventure" in itself. I'm going to head back inside and try to warm up.
