I didn't necessarily think it was a negative observation.
Maybe where your senses are attacked, I find mine are challenged-
-that may be the thing.

Mostly, my senses are sated.

But yes, it must be great, heading out of the city and suburbs and up into the Punjab, or where ever, on a motorcycle- into the space, peace and clean air.
That must be some contrast.

The pollution has reduced drastically in the last few years- first time I went,
I was really wondering how I would breathe... that was on the taxi ride from the airport.
I did get bronchitis but then I have managed to get bronchitis with every 10hr+ flight in the last 5 years.

Did you dine at any roadside Dabbas? Best food there is.
One shouldn't be put off by the "primitive" appearance.
Great food.

I am not averse to a bit of sensory overload - and perhaps if I hadn't been under the stress of riding while taking it all in, it may have seemed a bit less of an attack - I am no stranger to travelling and do love the immersion in another world.

As for the Roadside dabbas - absolutely. I travel to eat, and the finest dining, I've found in most countries is the roadside food.

In fact one of the most memorable meals of my life came on the North side of the Rhotang Pass on the Manali-Leh highway. We got to the plateau-like summit (about 14,500 ft if I recall) just as the sun was dropping behind the mountains and the wind was blowing low clouds along just above our heads. It was at this time that my headlight blew out. I switched to highbeam, which also immediately blew (short circuit in the wiring). I had to decend the next 35km/20ish miles down the edge of the pass by the light of the fortunately full moon. It took over an hour to get to a rest point about 20km/13 miles along - a low stone-walled tent with a patchwork tarp and parachute roof. ducking to go inside, I was hit with eye-wateringly thick smoke from the poorly vented wood stove. A single propane light lit the hut. I took a seat along the edge of the tent on some blanket covered plywood, and immediately - within a minute - a meal appeared. A cup of hot chai first, then steaming hot flatbread and two dishes - a goat stew and a cauliflower curry.

Though not the tasiest meal I had on the trip, it was easily the most welcome and memorable meal. The final push to the night's camp came much more easily after that.

We had a similar scary driving experience, followed by excellent food.
Driving through the Punjab to Amritsar- 30km of pea soup fog, then aloo paratas, pickles and ginger chai on the roadside.

That sounds like a fantastic meal - I'm starting to get hungry for Indian food just reading about it. Somehow food always tastes better after a bit of a scare on the road... once that copper-like taste of fear has subsided, of course.

Well, I wasn't wearing a fedora at the time but it definitely was action and adventure ...

That's me (the big guy slightly left of center frame) running the scene of a house fire this weekend. Talk about hot - that was one HOT fire.

How does this tie into the theme of this thread, you ask? Well, the house was built about 1900 (so it's "vintage"). It had been abandon for a number of years and had deteriorated beyond all reasonable repair. This was a training fire, so prior to "lighting it off" several of us took the opportunity to explore the house. Other than finding one old milk bottle from the 1940's, not much interesting was left.

I really hate to see these old houses go, but this one had been used as a hang-out for seedy characters for several years and the owner wanted it gone. Oh well, it did provide for some very good training for our firefighters.

One from Banff where I'd been Dog Sledding all day and we were out at Lake Louise that night (photo by moonlight only at 11M) and it was 30 below. Fortunately cold doesn't bother me... as you can see i have my parka off.

It's a Panama hat that was made in Ecuador. I bought it from a lady selling hats in Mexico for $20 bucks. It was the hat I took ever where when I was in Mexico in July. Thanks...

Lets rewind to 1992...early in the year I had moved from Melbourne to Sydney prior to departing to Europe for an as yet undetermined period.

While in Sydney, i spent quite a bit of time exploring the spectacular Blue Mountains by spending days on end either on foot or on bike across the entire region..

Very beautiful place. Looks like the "Chapada dos Guimarães", in Brazil.
