A vintage Paddock Coat

Today I picked up what appears to be an Edwardian-era Paddock Coat(?) in great condition. :D

I have to say, the quality is truly fantastic. It's probably the best quality I've ever seen in a garment, vintage or not. Tailors really knew what they were doing back then. Unfortunately there are no tags to be found anywhere on the coat. Extremely heavy and thick.

No pictures at the moment, my camera died last night. I'm looking to get another one soon. I'll post some pics when I'm able. You'll be blown away by the quality.

Finally, pics of this garment. Any other thoughts as to the age?

Love this photo, shows the quality and that it was handmade:

No labels, unfortunately.

Thanks for your age assessment. It's a great piece of work. The wool is incredibly thick and heavy weight. I love how the stitching throughout the coat is absolutely perfect and yet under the collar it's far from perfect: gives it character, a personal touch and shows it was made by a human rather than a machine.

An remarkable garment. Do you have any of the story behind it? Even in photos, the wool looks like nothing one could see today. Unbelievably dense yet still seems to have drape. Something so well made and unmarked - must have been an expensive coat to begin with. I' say it was a complete custom job, but that's obvious, isn't it? And who would make such a thing and not put some kind of park somewhere? Unless the client forbid it? Even Brooks Bros marked their stuff from the get-go.
Edwardian is right, I'm sure. Earlier, and the sleeve attachments would be roped and almost poet-y...

(thinking out loud)

(Adding)
Then again, here is W. H. Taft, around the early 1920's. Similar, at least. He had lost much of his famous tonnage by then.

No idea as to its history. I bought it at a local antique shop.
The lack of tags is puzzling, making me first wonder if it wasn't homemade but the quality is too fine for that. Your scenario of the client forbidding any tags or even removing them (though I see no signs that tags were present in the first place) seems likely.

The lack of tags and the wonky stitching on the collar and the general look of the garment suggests to me that it might be a costume jacket, made for theatre or events. Some of those costumes use similar materials and workmanship to the originals. Might not be all that old. But hard to say without seeing it in person, isn't it?

I disagree. This is not a costume piece, and is indeed that old. That wool would be all but impossible to reproduce. And a costume piece would be marked: production, ownership, and at that high level (a theatre/film that might be able to have this level of work done would be a very major production house) the actor, which number of how many, etc.

Scotrace you might be right, it's simply my hypothesis based on a friend of mine who used to wear a period costume to one of our tourist attractions a pretend gold minign town outside Melbourne. Made for re-enactment, not a movie. His costume was made for him, sourced from period materials and has no lables.

I do not think this is a costume piece. It looks too old to be that, although it could just as well be an old costume. The undercollar reveals that this coat is not a top of the range job; it has been padded by machine and the stitching is rather sloppy. Nevertheless it is a nice coat, and it is certainly far better made than most modern RTW coats.
