I agree. Sounds more like Night at the Wax Museum. Aren't Tom and Ben a bit old for the Hardy Boys? Gotta be an Urban Legend. Now if they cast Paul Giamatti and Bob Balaban....hmmm

Occasionally, the movies surprise. One shot in "The Hidden Staircase" finds Nancy standing on a car's running board, holding a Luger (attitudes about guns certainly have changed since the 1930s). In her fashionable vintage attire, she looks more like Bonnie Parker than Bonita Granville.

I saw this movie last night. Great clothes, cute girl and father and boyfriend, nice scenery. But they used every cliche known to mysteries, except for "the butler did it." And of course you have to suspend quite a bit of disbelief. Yet I still enjoyed it. Among movies full of neurotics and vulgarians with no boundaries, it was fun to see a clever, resourceful girl with a sunny disposition and a kind heart.

Turner Classic Movies just showed a couple of Bonita Granville's yesterday morning, and you can even get them at Family Dollar stores. If nothing else the cars, clothes, and sets make them worth watching.
