I also have to do it for work reasons.

Plus, I get a bit cornfuzed on who is talking to who when the say, "Hey, Bob," but no one's screen name is Bob!

I have no idea how or why anyone would think you're Bob, but things happen.

I would not mind being called, "Bob", under the right circumstances, as I am sure you would find it approving, "Hey Bob, catch this large sack full of Money and keep it, will ya"? Heck, I would settle being called, "Edna", under that circumstance!

My first name is Daniel. And I am sure for the most part, as in life, I am a stinker!

Often when people ask if they can get me anything, I'll reply, "Sure, I'll take a small bag of twentys. Oh hell, if you're going to the trouble, make it a large bag!"

I certainly get some bemused looks!

I like a clever screen name as well as the next guy, but I've found on other forums that the biggest "trolls" are usually the ones who never give out their real names. Internet bullies rarely use their own names, that takes the safety out of talking trash. Not saying that ever happens here, but it made me quit using any kind of code name. Mine is not hard to figure out, just my first initial and my last name. Not really worried about a sneaky hat thief knowing where I live, as most folks wouldn't fit in my hats anyway, unless they needed a new gazebo or car cover. Frank
(last name same as RBH's first name)

I actually wish I had registered under my real name, Mitzy, instead of Esme. I go by variations of Esmeralda on most forums, etc. My husband has bad scoliosis and uses Quasimodo as an on-screen moniker, and Esmeralda was Quasi's girl, so....
My real name is a good vintage name, though, and I would rather be called Mitzy than Esme, but - whatever.
I understand why some people don't use their real names, though.

Fine I'll jump in too. When I first joined the internet I needed a name for my Aol email and I needed to remember it so I used my initials Jed for Jeffrey Edward Dyer (plus my grandmother always called me Jed) WBPM for my Masonic title "Worshipful Brother Past Master" This worked out well since most of my early time on line was on the Masonic Boards so it worked out fine. The next place I hung out was the Bagpipe forums and the PM became Pipe Major which I am for my band Pyramid Shriners Pipes and Drums. On Disney boards I use Masonic Mouse but there is more then one of us so it you google me it might not be me. Jeff seems to be a very common fist name to go along with my last name. In fact there is a facebook group for "I have had sex with Jeff Dyer". How cool are we. So see ya in the funny pages

I often put my first name at the end of posts, and I believe I've put my last name out there at some point as well. My user name is simply my initials in the military phonetic alphabet, which I had to give when talking with the distant end (Comm) for their log. I've used Tango or Tango Yankee for a while now.

As a long-time Internet user I can certainly understand why anyone wouldn't want to use their real name--it's simply self-defense. I'm a bit more blase' about it; heck, I even have where I live under Location and have spoken a number of times about my home town. I think the chances of such an attitude of biting me in the butt are slim, but do know there is a chance. Who knows, a Master Hat Thief might be lurking here right now, scheming whose hat collections to swoop in and plunder!!! :D Or not.

Cheers,
Tom

You're right of course, Tom. I don't think I'm so important to anyone that he or she would run the risks, legal and otherwise, of doing me any real harm in the "real" world.

But on some of those Wild West sites, well, I dunno. The passions there can run real high -- so high that I question some of the posters' impulse control. Even with that being the case, the odds of such a crank actually going through the trouble of finding me and doing me any harm are so remote as to be all but nonexistent. Or so I'd like to think. Still, in the interest of sparing such a person (and myself) all that trouble, I'd just as soon he or she not have any idea who I actually am.

When Forgotten Man, who used to be .. . . what was his name previously?
WildRoot.

I wonder how many of us would change our username if given the opportunity?
Imagine the confusion if we had the ability to change our username through the control panel. It would be forum anarchy!! lol

Oh my land, it would be utter chaos. We'd have to rely on avatars, and that's not saying much.

I'm still pleased with my username. [huh]

My screen name is the name of a B-24 piloted by a close friend whom has passed on. I typically go by HeyMoe or JohnnyDollar on most forums - even signed up here with JohnnyDollar until I remembered I had a HeyMoe account (yeah, I'm not the brightest bulb in the pack).

Anyway, my name is Chris and I am a hataholic

The term "hataholic" a statement of truth (and sorrow) for those that have hats, wants hats, lust for them, and at times just cannot find the right size to fit!
