My mother said to me years ago: Don't take life too seriously; you won't get out of it alive, anyway.

I always liked Polonius' advice to his son, Laertes, in Hamlet: To thine own self be true.

As for weight loss advise, here is another one, gleaned from the writer, Colette: Oh, give me the heartbreak of unrequited love if it will help me to lose a few pounds."

"You grow up the day you have the first real laugh...at yourself" -- Ethel Barrymore

You can't take yourself too seriously. I make it my goal to find humor in life everyday.

One of my personal faves as well and it's inscribed on a wall back home in Auckland which I used to walk past most days.

For life: Live each day like it is your last, learn as if you will live forever. - Ghandi

As a teacher: "I believe in standardizing automobiles, not human beings" Albert Einstein

A bit of advice from my father: Whenever possible, let the other guy save face.

Secret to a long life is to keep breathing as long as possible.

Or the fella who climbed Everest with no oxygen, when asked why he went up there to die, replied "I didn't, I went up there to live"

Also, the signature of Sergei is a great one, I paraphrase:

One should not arrive, on the day of their death, by sliding peacefully into their coffin all prim and proper, looking well for the onlookers. You should skid in, martini in one hand, chocolate in the other, saying "Wooo Hoo! What a ride!"

Cheers

Not sure who first said this, but I like it:

"You can pretend to be serious, but you can't pretend to be funny."

And one I refer to a lot when discussing flying, an old saying given to new pilots-in-training in WWII:

"The object of the game is not to cheat death. It's never to let him play the game."

I just ran across this one in Wild Women Talk About Love and liked it so much I thought it needed to be here.

I have many. Mostly I seem to utilize:

"The only way through is through."
For when things are challenging.

"You can't go backwards through a brick wall."
For when regret threatens to set in.

"Ignorance isn't bliss, it's just ignorance." -Jesse Russell
I use this. A lot.

See statement immediately above that one.

One more from me:

"One of the dangers of our age, more damaging than ever before, is total obsession with partial ideas."
