These lapels entice and repel.
I’m going to give my opinion that these suits are new, and very well done. Just has to do with the fabric and the cut resembling others on the show that I know are custom for the leads. These two peak lapel beauties are very similar to eachother. The only real problem I have with them is the pressing job on the lapels. The crease is irritating to see on screen. That lapel is screaming for a nicely done creaseless roll with no line of a fold ruining the look.

So that's why those suits never looked 100% right to me. I like the suits a lot, but that crease definitely ruins it.

I'm fairly certain that Greefield Clothiers of Brooklyn, NY makes all (or most?) of the suits for Boardwalk Empire. I imagine they probably do their full custom tailor process (which is MTM that comes close to bespoke) for the main actors and OTR suits to cloth the supporting actors and extras. For those who don't know, Greenfield Clothiers was formerly the notable golden era maker GGG clothes until Martin Greenfield, an employee since the 40s, bought out the company in the 70s.

fftopic: Martin Greenfield himself is quite a remarkable fellow; not only is his life story an American rags-to-riches tale, but he is also an immigrant and concentration camp survivor! He is very well respected in the American Jewish community and has done an enourmous amount of Mitzvahs for the community of Brooklyn.

according to Marc C, a batch of about 20 (if i recall correctly) deadstock 20s suits were used in the film, of which this is one:

i definitely saw a couple of others in season two which looked original, but i couldn't tell you the character's names.

That's the actor who play the character based on the real life gangster Chalres "Lucky" Luciano. I agree that the suit he's wearing definitely looks to be an original. You almost never see moden suitings that are that wonderfully distinctive!

You know its funny you say this. I was re-watching some episodes from the first season and there are sometimes when I think Chalky (and I do like his character on the show) looks like he steped right from a Style Forum thread or a Sartorialist post.

When you're right, you're right. Aren't the wardrobe people paid to get this stuff right? I mean it's the details, sure, but even the little details add up to make the look period correct. Where are the historical consultants to check these things? Or is that a job Matt ought to be paid good money for?
