Had a chance to stop by this past week and visit with Mike Moore, FL member MajorMoore at his house and shop. He has a great set-up and some beautiful hats hanging around. I have hung around with a lot of cowboy shooters and know a good looking cowboy hat when I see one. He makes some of the finest looking, period correct hats I have ever seen. And some great looking not-period correct, but movie correct, hats as well.

He was kind enough to stretch my Knox silver belly. I also picked up a wonderful medium brown, feather weight all beaver fedora with a C-crown. I wore it to the sporting clays range today. I also picked up a medium gray fedora with a nice tall straight crown and a 2 1/2" brim and wide black ribbon. Diamond bash. Beauty.

Mike is just a great guy and I'm proud to wear some examples of his hats. After seeing his RBH TVA, I knew I had to have a hat from Mike.

I will post some pics as soon as I can get this stupid camera to download properly.

The 5 inch brimmed gus hat:D I wanted the ultimate shade producer!lol But I am definitely going to get another western straw either 4 inch or 3.5 inch brim.
The wife's is a custom felt western that he did to match her Luchesse boots, I have seen a pic of it and he did an incredible job on it!

It doesn't matter what kind of hat it is when you've got memories attached to it, sounds like a keeper to me!:)

You are absolutely right. I soaked it alittle and took out the beat up cattleman crease and put a c-crown in it. Staightened out the brim a bit. I will post a work in progress picture tonight, but I need to do some more work to it.:)

Mike has some great antique hat making tools. He showed me how they were used. Really he went through the whole process with me. It was fascinating.

You lucky dog, Warbird! :D
Yep the Major is a super nice guy, did he happen to show you the first western hat he made for himself ? That is one sweet hat.
Just to let out a little more info... the Major is working on me a hat for the Memphis gathering that will be unveiled then.
He and I are both excited about this one, I plan on keeping it under wraps till the get together :D

Also thanks for the more than kind words on the TVA. That was a hat I had wanted for a long time and the Major brought it to life for me.

Thanks for the kind words, my home and shop here at the house is open to anyone that is passing thru, I travel alot right now and some times I might not be here when you pass thru, its best to e-mail and let me know and I will try and rework my travel plans.

Did anyone see this morning's "Sunday Morning"? was a nice part on hats and how the hat has changed and how they were worn and how they are worn now, it was a a nice postive show on hats, hope there were millions watching it, and they will decide like so many of us to wear a hat again, or for the first time.

Indycop's wife's hat is a real custom western hat, I have taken it these last two weekends and showed it to many people and all say the same thing, " that is a great looking hat, and the two colors look so good together" I will allow him and her to post the hat when they pick it up in Memphis when we get together at the Peabody Hotel.

I spent most of yesterday looking thru old western photos and books, to study and review the hats that were worn during the real western time frame of 1865 thru 1899.

I spent a great day last week with Warbird here in the shop, the thing I picked up on was he looked like a little kid at Xmas looking at all the gifts left under the tree, Warbird , could not look at everything and see it all being used, but I think he was much impressed in what he saw and all the hat bodies I have both in the work shop and the sewing room, along with all the ribbon I have on hand.

Again, my home is open to any that want to stop by.

Alright here we go, I am posting pics. I said I never would, but for the Major I will. I cannot see in the sun w/o glasses, so the squinting is bad. Sorry. The hats are all of the style I prefer; tall crown 2 1/2 to 2 3/4" brim.

Beaver featherlight made by Major Moore. It has a feather, I hate feathers. But I like this one so I left it there. It really is light as a feather too. I was amazed. Doing what I do, shooting. Today it's busting some clay birds. Hey it's a living.

My Knox silverbelly. Vintage, great hand. It looks almost tapered from the angle, but it isn't. I love this hat. The major just gave it a bit of a freshening up and a slight stretch. Fits great now. It has a tall crown and a 2 1/2" brim.

My Major Moore grey diamond bash..What I have been wanting, wide ribbon medium gray. This will see a lot of use come fall.

I think he did a great job.
