Is it an accepted FL maxim upon that a 2" brim is a no-no?

I picked my first (and only, so far) fedora without asking the brim width (or measuring it), but I knew I wanted to avoid a super-wide Indy-esque, adventurer-style brim. I wanted something more like the hats I see in 1930s movies, not pictures from the 1940s.

I have a fairly narrow face (not as narrow as it used to be, but still) and found that a narrower brim was better for me.

And the hat I ended up buying, as it turned out, has a 2" brim.

Is that so wrong? Not all of us want to look like a 1940s archaeologist.

No Sir, not wrong at all. As it happens my ideal brim width lies between 2 3/8" and 2 5/8", shorter & I look like a tool, wider & I look like a dweeb. Simply a matter of personal preference, like brim up or down or "no black hats".

The hat is in fact made of rabbit felt. It is made in China. Even so at that price it is worth the money.
Dorfman Pacific has a full line of these hats in their fall catalog.

I'd consider buying one of these $25 hats if they would fit me.

Dang my giant hayed.

Just curious: Do those of you who are inclined to opine on such things think the brim on the hat in my picture suits me? Don't worry about bruising my feelings if you don't; I can take it. I'm still learning about hats and would be interested in having your input.

I think that brim size looks great, and seems to work with the crown. As Dinerman said, 2" to 2 1/4" brims look fantastic on taller, straight-sided crowns.

I used to wear nothing but 2 1/2" brims, but now that I've been playing for a while with early-1930s styles with 2", 2 1/8" and 2 1/4" brims, I practically wear no other size. I never thought I would enjoy or look good wearing a 2" brim, but on a 6" open crown hat, I look ready for the Stock Market crash!lol

:eek:fftopic: I'm getting really sick of seeing people pluralize "fedora" by adding an apostrophe and s. Please, everyone, think back to third grade and remember that apostrophes are used to denote possession or to replace one or more letters in contractions. They are NOT used when pluralizing a noun that ends in a vowel, no matter how awkward it looks to put an s directly after a vowel!

Sorry, just had to get that off my chest.

Amen, Brother!

Since you asked ... :) ...

I think the hat would look good on you if you got a bigger size? It looks like it's sitting really high up on your head.

Then again, it seems like people here really like their hats high up on their heads. I personally don't understand it, and maybe it's me who's wearing it "wrong".

Thanks for the feedback.

Perhaps it appears high on my head in that picture, but it generally sits pretty low, even touching one ear or the other at times (say, right after a haircut). I think maybe I have a long oval head -- there's definitely some space on either side between the hat and my temples -- and this is not that kind of hat, so that could be why.

Ordered one

I have been wanting a gray hat, with a shorter crown. At $24 bucks + shipping I'll take a chance on it. If nothing else it will make a good throw on hat in rain, etc.

Wingnut, I'm with you. I don't blame those who misuse apostrophes, but I would blame myself if I never spoke up and tried to help them learn from their mistakes.

By the way, thanks for the cartoon- I've never seen it before. And thanks to Tango Yankee for making me realize there was a link in your post.

Aerol- good find! I can tell it will come in handy!

Skyvue, a lot of us here don't particularly want to look like Indy! Your hat looks fine, but if you have any doubts, keep experimenting, and you'll find THE hat eventually, or several great hats.

There is nothing wrong with stingy brims, they just get a bad rap because so many here lament the fact that after the 50s they began to dominate the market, and a lot of us prefer the look of a wider brim.

Thanks. I'd love to experiment much more, but I wear a damn 7 7/8, and hats that big NEVER seem to show up on eBay.

Complete with a soft cotton sweatband! But seriously, this looks like a much better option than the "lite felt" wool junk that sells for twice as much.

SOLD OUT

Well I thought I was getting this hat, but it's sold out. They had another fur felt called the Stan at the same price, but it's sold out also. They offered to give me a wool felt for the same price, but I declined.

Yeah, once I saw it was made in China...that was it. I'm not buying it.

Mustang, China's good enough to make your computer, but it's not good enough to make your hat?!? :p

As much as I would like to discuss/debate these things, I think it's best to keep that can of worms closed. ;)
