Last year I filmed the Queen Mary event and sold DVDs and VHS's of the festivities (More info here). It was pretty fun watching everyone else having fun. I stayed in a hotel in Downtown Long Beach, and since I don't drive, it was difficult getting from one side of the harbor to the other. I took a bus and walked about a mile or 2 to and from the bus stop Downtown, and a couple of yards to the Queen. The formal dinner was the hardest because I had to go back and change into my tuxedo and return in time so I wouldn't miss anything.

That's the difficulties of filming an event. You don't want to miss anything because people are going to be asking about it. But there was another difficulty, as well. I didn't really talk to many people and many didn't talk to me either. I felt a cold shoulder some of the time, probably because no one really knew why there was this guy with a large camera pointed at them. I did ask MK a week before, but didn't really ask anyone if I could film them. No one seemed to mind, I suppose.

I sometimes joke when I am filming people eating (it happens), that I'm doing it because when I get home I can watch other people eating when I didn't at all. I was busy filming them doing it. That's not far from the truth. There's a big sacrifice in filming an event. You aren't including yourself. Sure I did talk to a few people, but for the most part, I was just the guy with a camera, not spoken to, and not speaking. Doesn't sound too exciting, huh?

Well, I thought about it since the last event whether or not I was going to film this years too. I'm deciding not to. I will however film the fashion show and possibly shortly film other activities if the attendees don't mind, but for the most part, I'm not going to do what I did last year. It took a lot of time away from me having fun and I feel it intimidated a few people too. I kind of look at myself as someone capturing moments in time. When you watch home movies or video from years and years ago, there was someone like me behind that camera. I have video I took when I first went to high school. That was 4 years ago. Imagine looking at it 10 years from now. It's a time warp.

So do not be afraid when you see ye camera in my grasp, because I shall not press the little red button until I have your accord. :)

I sometimes consider myself just an 'observer' or 'outsider' when I'm shooting an event. But at a recent city-sponsored dinner/dance party (disco-themed) the organizers kept handing me drink tickets and as the night wore on the picture taking became more fun for some reason.[huh] I did shoot a very important formal event not long ago. I only knew a few people there, I found that mingling a bit before set them at ease. Heck, I was dressed better than most of them and I actually think that contributed to making them comfortable with me.
