I just watched an episode of Boardwalk Empire and something was said that I missed when I first watched the series a few years back. It's where Al Capone attended a Bar Mitzvah and was told he should change hats, Al ask why, "this one not good enough" and he was told, he's a "man and not a boy, why wear a boy's cap".

That had to be a line from the fiction script being so many men still wore the newsboys in the 20s and 30s, especially the working class. Maybe it was thought of it being from higher class to wear a hat and not a cap. Am I correct assuming this?

I don't remember the episode but I can tell you that in Judaism, especially American Orthodox Judaism, symbolism is very big, and the passage of a boy to a man at age 13 is a big deal. What the rest of society did, and still does, holds very little sway with that community.

That line is symbolic of that plateau in a (n Orthodox) Jewish boy's life.
