A-2 Jacket Ring around the Collar

I have an A-2 jacket with "ring around the collar" from neck oil/grime/sweat. What do you do to remove the embedded dirt, and to prevent this from happening in the future (besides wearing collared shirts). Is there something I can apply to the inside collar that is dermatologically safe?

Hi, pioneercmt,

Once you have it cleaned try ScothGuarding it - that may keep the collar cleaner longer.

Then maybe once a month - give it a cleaning and repeat SG.

Lexol cleaner (not the conditioner--they make both) might work. You might also try saddle soap after the lexol cleaner to see if that works. You will need something to condition the leather after cleaning with the Lexol, anyway, and saddle soap is a good conditioner. If the collar is stained, neither the Lexol cleaner nor the saddle soap will help you much, as they are both primarily intended for use on sweaty tack (saddle, bridles, etc.). Professional cleaning may be your best avenue.

I'm sorry to contradict Peacoat but saddle soap is actually not a good thing to use on your A2 jacket. Great for saddles.

To condition an A2, use Pecard leather treatment.

Whatever you use, go slowly, test on scrap leather (if you have some) first, etc.

Know a lot about saddles and bridles, but don't know a thing about leather coats. Would have thought leather would be leather, though. Thanks for the correction.

Pioneercmt,

Once you get the collar cleaned ( I like Pecards also) you may want to purchase a silk aviator's scarf to wear if you don't feel like wearing a collared shirt. That will prevent future soiling of the inside.
